About
In the heart of the Fox Valley, J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue is one of Neenah's most unusual stops for anyone who loves fish and exotic animals. This nonprofit isn't a typical retail fish store — it's a rescue that takes in surrendered freshwater fish, reptiles, birds, and other exotic pets that ordinary shelters aren't set up to handle, then matches them with prepared adopters. The roster rotates constantly with whatever comes through the door, so a visit is always a little different.
On the aquatic side you'll find freshwater fish and the supplies to keep them, including bettas available for adoption in Neenah, WI — one reviewer happily took home a little Bumblebee Betta named Hace and watched him heal and thrive. When a longtime hobbyist was ready to part with a 15-year-old aquarium, the team handled the whole tank transition with practiced confidence, and they routinely walk new keepers through setup so nothing goes home unprepared. Recent adopters rave about that same thoughtful care.
Several have brought home ball pythons — Nagini and an Enchi Spider named Enzo among them — praising staff who patiently covered enclosure planning, husbandry, and even each animal's personality and quirks before pickup. Others have adopted frogs, bearded dragons, tegus, lovebirds, and hamsters, noting how healthy and content every animal looked. The shop doubles as a community fixture.
An indoor turtle pond lets kids feed the residents for a quarter, while team member Megan carries ambassador animals to libraries and schools across Wisconsin — a leopard gecko named Sam even lives in a school speech-therapy room. Knowledgeable, genuinely caring, and refreshingly no-judgment about surrenders, this is a fish store and rescue the Neenah area is lucky to have. Stop in to meet the animals, see the freshwater fish available in person, and find out what's looking for a home this week.

“I appreciate this rescue so much! I first met Nagini in January, and from the very beginning the staff was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and supportive. They took the time to walk me through enclosure planning and husbandry recommendations, which gave me plenty of time to build and prepare her setup properly before bringing her home. When pickup day came, they made sure I had all of the information I needed about Nagini’s personality, habits, and history — including the very important warning that she’s a bit of an escape artist 🤭. You can tell they genuinely care about the animals they rescue and about setting adopters up for success. The entire experience was smooth, welcoming, and educational from start to finish. Since bringing her home in January, Nagini has been a happy, healthy, thriving ball python, and I couldn’t be more grateful for this rescue and the care they put into what they do.”

— Joanne Hoks5.04 months ago“I have to say something about my experience earlier today. I am mentoring a youth and I brought him in to your facility and this whole place was shockingly amazing. I had no idea it even existed and the staff member who was working yesterday at about 4pm was SO FRIENDLY and engaging. She literally made this young boy so happy he could not stop talking about the experience the whole drive home. Thank you to everyone who works and volunteers at this facility. I am going to tell everyone I know about this place. It is the most amazing place I have come across in YEARS in the fox valley. ❤️”
