Tucked into Monona, Wisconsin, The Golden Guppy has built a devoted following across the greater Madison area — the kind of shop people drive an hour to visit and never regret. 9-star rating across 254 reviews, it's earned that loyalty through genuinely healthy fish, an impressive live plant selection, and a staff that customers call out by name: Katie, Cody, Will, and Tristan each get personal shoutouts for their patience and expertise. Walk in and the first thing you'll notice is what you don't smell.
The tanks are meticulously maintained, and the fish show it — multiple reviewers report purchases thriving for years, surviving cross-state moves without issue. The freshwater selection covers solid ground: neocaridina and amano shrimp, guppies, mollies, platties, plecos, African dwarf frogs, bettas, and assassin snails all get specific mentions. For planted tank enthusiasts, the live plant inventory rivals or beats online shops in both variety and price, and the staff is genuinely skilled at helping customers design setups from low-tech shrimp bowls to full 90-gallon planted showcases.
The store stocks Aquarium Co-Op products, a detail that signals credibility to the hobby community. Beyond retail, Golden Guppy offers practical services that set it apart: free water testing, fish compatibility consultations, and a tank cleaning service that reviewer after reviewer praises. Tristan, specifically, gets credit for transforming neglected inherited tanks into thriving ecosystems.
They also run a buy-back program — one customer raised African dwarf frog babies and sold them back for store credit. Pricing is consistently described as reasonable for a local independent shop, and a rewards program sweetens repeat visits. The one occasional gripe is wait times during busy periods, though the shop has been responsive to that feedback.
For freshwater fishkeepers in the Madison area looking for healthy livestock, expert planted tank guidance, and a team that genuinely wants your setup to succeed, Golden Guppy delivers.

The best store to go to! About 98% of my stock has been purchased through them, and I’ve never had any issues. The employees are very friendly, knowledgeable, and will absolutely point you in the right direction if you need help. I hate to admit that yesterday I became that 1% of customers—showing up right before closing—but they were still more than happy to assist me in picking out a couple of plants I needed (and wanted), with no excuses or complaints. That’s exactly why I’m giving this store a 5-star review. Not only do they sell quality products and very healthy fish, but their customer service is truly top-notch. Here is my 1 month 90 gallon for reference

Terrible when busy. Poor ability to communicate with customers. No lines, just random help. Not in order. Waited 25 minutes prior to any help. The fish, however, all look healthy and prices decent. Edit- was told they were the only person working after inquiring about ticket system and seeing out of order assistance. Frankly, that’s a methodology problem. The smart move is a ticket system specifically for times when it’s very busy, that way people are helped in a fair order and not who’s loudest or most annoying. Right now that activity is incentivized. Do better. Edit 2 - Adding a star for the quick and reasonable review response. Will reevaluate in the future.

I drive an hour to this fish store because they genuinely care about their fish and the customer! Since I started the aquarium hobby 5 months ago, Golden Guppy has been my GO TO place! Katie, Cody and Will are superb at what they do with all the knowledge and patience they have for customers. They definitely deserve the recognition. Cheers, Golden Guppy! Y'all never let me down! See you soon, sincerely, James Abela <3

This place has quality fish and plants. I've gotten fish from other places and they never last. These fish ive gotten from golden puppy have been with me for 2 years and have gone through two moves and are still perfect. I can't wait to get more to fill this tank. These plants are also from the shop. The owner is super nice and helpful

I don’t know where to begin. They are outstanding in customer service. Everyone of them has helped me at one point or another. I am starting up a new big tank as an older adult and I have many questions. Not only did they educate me but happily showed me how they use their equipment to clean the tanks, monitor the water conditions providing free testing, monitor fish compatibility and provide guarantees above and beyond other fish stores. For example, two of the fish I purchased struggled and they listened at length, gave me suggestions and in the end some compensation when they did not do well. Customer service does not exist in many places like this anymore. I so look forward to going to see them and pick out some more fish. Great run business. A 5 star from me.
