About

The Fish Factory sits on Milwaukee's south side, and walking in feels like stepping into one of those YouTube fish-room tours — except every tank is stocked with livestock you can actually take home. This family-owned aquarium store keeps the room warm and the music going, an atmosphere regulars describe as a tropical haven no matter the Wisconsin season. The freshwater plant wall is the headliner; one longtime customer calls the selection "second to none," and shelves of aquascape rocks and hardscape sit nearby for anyone building a planted tank or paludarium.

Selection runs deep on both sides of the hobby. You'll find African cichlids, angelfish, blood parrot cichlids, severums, puffers, and bettas housed in their own tanks rather than cups, plus a saltwater and coral section that pulls reef hobbyists from across southeastern Wisconsin. Shoppers hunting ghost shrimp, snails, and other invertebrates for sale in Milwaukee, WI tend to leave with more than they planned.

Frozen foods like bloodworms keep regulars restocking, and the shop fills CO2 tanks in-house — a detail planted-tank keepers near me genuinely appreciate. The staff is the real draw. Brandon and Tyler earn repeated shoutouts: Tyler recently moved a customer's fully planted 65-gallon setup so smoothly that "you would never know the tank had been completely emptied," reassembled, and restocked.

Others credit patient guidance and repeated water tests before any livestock leaves the building — one keeper says the shop's advice revived a struggling betta now going on six years old. Loyalty perks like Fish Factory Bucks and Monday discounts tied to how many points the Packers score give locals another reason to stop in. Prices run higher than big-box stores, a point several reviewers raise, but most frame it as paying for healthy, well-kept fish.

For Milwaukee aquarists who want hands-on help and an inventory worth browsing in person, The Fish Factory remains a standout.

Customer reviews

  • “My fiance and I have been coming here for almost a year. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable!! We have set up a 30 gallon live aquarium in our home from here which completely revived our struggling betta. He's going on 6 years! He has many fish buddies now, all of which have never gotten sick. If you want advice and guidance, this is the place to go 100%.”

  • “Tyler and the team at Fish Factory did an amazing job moving my fully planted 65-gallon aquarium. The move was smooth, professional, and stress-free. By the end of the day, you would never know the tank had been completely emptied, transported, and reassembled. My fish showed virtually no signs of stress, and everything looks fantastic. As the owner of a very opinionated blood parrot cichlid, I can confirm the fish approved of the move. Fish Factory is a solid operation, and the team clearly knows their stuff. Highly recommend!”

  • “Got the cutest betta there today and he is settling in very well. The shop is fantastic and the employees were great! Definitely recommend stopping in even just to look around.”

  • “Really nice people helping but the prices are a little HIGH.”

  • “I drove an hour to the fish store specifically to buy some fish, but when we got there, they told us they couldn't sell them because the fish hadn't been entered into their inventory system or priced yet. It was really surprising because they had the fish physically in the store and a ready buyer standing right there. Instead of entering them into the system and completing the sale, they said they couldn't sell them at all. After driving that far, it felt very odd and frustrating."”

  • “Used to have had a lot of great experiences here, but the past few times I've had to deal with bad staff. They've sold me half dead plants and other plants that haven't finished acclimating to being underwater. If you go in and any of them have friends in the store (it's happened multiple times), get ready to wait, and then get rushed so they can go back to talking. I don't see all the "great advice" the others are getting, I've had to deal with the same guy for the past 4 times now and it's always a displeasure.”

  • “Smaller pet store but we'll laid out, the staff is great. Their selection of plants is second to none. They make you feel welcome.”

  • “Nice shop, but the prices are sky high. Found the exact same fish I paid $99 for at another store I highly respect for $30, the next day. They have juvenile red spot sevrum for $60, this other store $25. Same size and just as good quality. I know cause I ordered one and actually got 30% off so got it for $17.50 instead of paying $60 here. Prices aren’t even close. I promise you can find the same fish, just as good quality or better at half the price. Don’t be afraid to buy online, see a fish you like in a store, check respectable online sellers first cause at this store you are getting ripped off. 3 stars cause I learned a few things while there but that only got me to pay up for other stuff.”

  • “Crew here is knowledge able and helpful to get you set up with what works best for your tanks. Good selection and always adding new and different fish u dont see at the other guys. Usually good size fish too. If you have a issue with purchase they help resolve quickly.”

  • “The staff here is young but knowledgeable and helpful. That wealth of knowledge and an exceptional selection of all times of fish, both fresh and saltwater - makes The Fish Factory a must stop if you’re in Milwaukee. While the ambiance of a fish store is not essential when making a purchase, the warm climate, great music and friendly staff of Brandon and crew made my experience fantastic. I am a regular there, and return often for bloodworms and additional fish. They take great care of their fish and provide a wonderful selection of species , accessories and tanks to make your experience complete. Promotions such as Fish Factory Bucks and Monday discounts based on the amount of points that the Green Bay Packers score are all the more reason to make the trip. I have an 8 year old daughter and 6 year old son and the staff is friendly and accepting. I consider The Fish Factory my home store and hope to continue that for years to come.”
