Badgerland Saltwater in Janesville, Wisconsin is a small, family-run shop that leans heavily into the saltwater side of the hobby while also stocking freshwater fish and supplies. The store carries a notable coral selection that has drawn repeat visitors eager to build out their reef tanks, and customers have walked out with hauls of six or more coral frags alongside saltwater fish in a single trip. For freshwater keepers, the shop sources fish like Bolivian rams through suppliers on request, typically with about a week turnaround, and stocks natural décor — one customer found the largest piece of spiderwood they'd ever seen.
The shop is a true mom-and-pop operation. The owner and family members work the floor, and interactions tend to be personal. The owner has been noted for walking customers through saltwater basics, while a younger staff member opened up once engaged with specific questions.
Multiple reviewers describe the staff as friendly, helpful, and genuinely interested in talking about setups and stocking ideas. That said, Badgerland Saltwater is a store where expectations should be calibrated to its size and scrappiness. Several reviewers have pointed out that the space could use better organization and more consistent tank maintenance — the saltwater display tank up front, home to a sea urchin, has been described as algae-covered, and the back room has drawn mixed reactions for its 3D printers and dusty inventory.
Stock levels can be hit or miss, with some visits yielding full tanks and others turning up mostly empty ones. Axolotls have appeared in the shop but their care has drawn concern from at least one visitor. Badgerland Saltwater works best for hobbyists in the Janesville area who want a local source for corals, saltwater fish, and freshwater supplies without driving to Madison or Milwaukee.
Come with questions, browse the coral selection, and keep an open mind about the rough-around-the-edges atmosphere — the personal service and coral variety are the real draw here.

Found the largest piece of spiderwood I've seen for my tank here, I was then asked about my set up. He showed me as I asked what fish his suppliers had available. Main fish I asked about was a Bolivian ram that he could get in within a week

Very dirty tanks, minimal selection, multiple dead fish in the tanks. They do have a lot of tank decor, but echo other reviews where that side is just chaos and dusty with things all over the place.

I've been in here twice, and I'm not impressed. The salt water display tank in the front was barely dripping from the clogged filter. Multiple dead fish, extremely limited stock, dirty and disorganized. I saw 2 axolotls a monthish ago, and they looked fine...went in yesterday and it's missing all of its gills and looked rough. I'm always down to buy fish, but most tanks were empty and the small stock they have isn't that great. The back room is just weird and a waste of half a store with 3d printers and overpriced stuff covered in dust. Small shop that nobody seems to be taking pride in. Comes off as someone who just likes to sell fish, but has no idea what they're doing.

Friendly, helpful, and understanding. I'm new to saltwater so I had questions and concerns. There was a younger guy that was a bit quiet, but after asking my questions, and some help from the owner, he was very helpful and talkative. The owner was also helpful and understanding. I got a friendly vibe from the people working there. The store doesn't look like the pictures and could use some cleaning up/reorganizing. There's an urchin in the front tank that could be a cool display piece but the tank is very covered in algae. There were a lot of corals that I'm excited to come back and buy. I'll be back to support this small business.

Decent selection at decent prices. The mother was there when we went and she was very helpful. Left with 2 new saltwater fish, and 6 corals. Good saltwater and fresh water selection, corals, equipment, food for the fish and corals and a super cute guinea pig

Lots of salt water fish, fresh water fish, furry and scaley animals.
