Aquatics Unlimited in Greenfield, Wisconsin has earned its reputation as a cornerstone of the southeast Wisconsin aquarium scene over many years, drawing hobbyists from across county lines and even neighboring states. 6 rating, it's a destination store that rewards the drive. The showroom is packed with freshwater and saltwater livestock in meticulously maintained tanks — reviewers consistently note the absence of dead fish and the staff actively cleaning glass during business hours.
The freshwater selection runs deep, from hardy beginner species to Mbuna cichlids, Severums, and an impressive roster of live plants. On the saltwater side, Aquatics Unlimited stands out for fully quarantining their marine livestock before sale, a practice that serious reef keepers will appreciate. Invertebrates get real attention here too: staff member Steve helped one customer build a self-sustaining cherry shrimp ecosystem in a jar, walking them through plant and substrate selection step by step.
The betta section deserves special mention — they carry standout varieties like blue rosetail bettas that you simply won't find at chain stores. Pond fish round out the livestock offerings, making this a true full-spectrum aquatics shop. Staff knowledge is the store's most cited strength.
Names like Coley, Jessica, and Steve come up repeatedly as patient educators who take time with customers, from explaining water parameters to helping first-time fish owners understand tank cycling and maintenance. Several reviewers describe employees teaching them proper care rather than just ringing up a sale. Pricing is a point of contention.
Multiple customers note that individual fish prices run higher than big-box competitors, and the old multi-fish bundle deals have disappeared. The counter-argument from loyal customers: you're paying for quarantined, healthy livestock and expert guidance that saves money in the long run. The tank displays themselves are worth browsing even without a purchase in mind.
Aquatics Unlimited operates as both a working fish store and an inspiration gallery for what's possible in the hobby.

First time fish owner here. I will drive to another county for a good honest pet store after several bad experiences elsewhere. Please, please, please avoid the big box stores, if you want pets that actually survive. The knowledge and care from each and every employee I have encountered here has been nothing short of pleasant and helpful. The tanks are all clean and well taken care of. And the employees educate you to do the same. I will continue going back.
