Exotic Tropical Petworld in McAllen, Texas has long been a fixture of the Rio Grande Valley's pet scene, though its story is one marked by both loyal devotion and significant controversy. The store built its reputation as a sprawling general pet shop carrying dogs, birds, reptiles, small animals like mice, and fish, along with a wide range of supplies and accessories. ' Exotic birds and snakes were among the more eye-catching offerings, and the store periodically ran deep discounts, with some shoppers reporting 50% off on select items.
However, Exotic Tropical Petworld's legacy is complicated. Multiple reviewers have raised serious concerns about animal welfare, including allegations of a fire that resulted in the death of over 20 animals. Others noted dirty tanks in the aquatic section, limited fish stock, and general disorganization throughout the store.
The freshwater fish area, when stocked, was described by some as underwhelming compared to chain competitors. What stands out most in recent reviews is an outpouring of nostalgia — the store appears to be closing its doors, and many long-time McAllen residents have come forward to share fond memories. 'So many years of a legacy, coming to a close,' wrote one customer.
Others expressed genuine sadness, describing Exotic Tropical Petworld as a place that held a special place in their lives and childhoods. The store's staff received mixed feedback. Some customers praised the helpful and knowledgeable team, while at least one reported a negative phone interaction.
For the McAllen community, Exotic Tropical Petworld represented something increasingly rare — a locally owned, full-service pet shop with personality and history. Its apparent closure marks the end of an era for the city's animal enthusiasts, even as questions about its animal care practices remain part of the conversation.

Maybe think twice about where you spend your money and which businesses you choose to support if you care about animals at all. This fire allegedly resulted in the death of over 20 animals and thinking about what they endured is heartbreaking. There is no justification for it and accountability matters. Money over the lives of that many animals is crazy
