About
Exotic Tropical Petworld is a long-running, locally owned pet shop in McAllen, TX, and one of the Rio Grande Valley's most recognizable places to shop for live animals in person. The store is best known across the Valley for its sprawling selection of exotic birds — parrots and more that have drawn visitors from as far away as Corpus Christi — but it has long kept an aquatics corner for freshwater hobbyists, making it a handy option if you're hunting for freshwater fish for sale in McAllen, TX without driving to a big-box chain. The shop is in the middle of a clear turnaround under new ownership, and recent visitors have noticed.
One shopper described 'an impressive improvement by the new owner,' pointing to fresh sections being built out in the back, gentle new staff, and a space that 'smells like new' and reads noticeably cleaner than before. Birds are kept in tidy enclosures, and several customers have praised how willing the team is to walk newcomers through caring for a new pet. For aquarium keepers, this is a general fish store rather than a specialist reef shop: think freshwater community fish, axolotls, and the everyday tanks, food, and dry goods that keep a setup running.
It pairs naturally with the rest of the livestock — small mammals like mice and chinchillas, plus reptiles and that headline bird collection — so a single in-person visit can cover a lot of ground. ' Beyond livestock, Exotic Tropical Petworld offers pet grooming and boarding, with regulars singling out staff member Nate for his careful work. If you're in McAllen and want to actually see freshwater fish, axolotls, exotic birds, and small pets before you buy, this homegrown shop is a local alternative to the chains — and it's best experienced by walking the aisles yourself.

— Michelle McDaniel5.0a month ago“Employee was actually super sweet and helpful, however we went last week for a snake and were told a prize, we came today and the snake prize was nearly 100 dollars more, 350 for a snake that goes in the market for 150. The manager didnt not even respect the previous prize or anything, pretty sad, we went elsewhere.”
— Amy H2.0a month ago“What a great store! We traveled all the way from Corpus Christi to come look at their variety of exotic birds. We were greeted with great hospitality and respect! The staff were very helpful. The owners were amazing! I would recommend anyone and everyone in the market for an exotic pet to swing by this location.”
— A. Caraker5.0a month ago“What I witnessed in this place is very concerning, I don’t understand how USDA inspections can pass this store in these conditions. I overheard an employee telling a customer that bearded dragons do not need heat and can safely be housed together, which does not match the basic care recommendations. I also saw a snake that appeared to have mites while it was being handled by that same employee, and during a few visits I noticed several lizards and snakes that also appeared to have mites. One of the lady employees at the front ignored us and walked to an office while directing another employee to help us. I also observed mammal bedding that appeared heavily soiled and with minimal enrichment as well, practically none. There are overcrowded bird enclosures, big birds in dog kennels, and a lack proper enrichment like perches or toys. The level of animal care and the conditions most of the animals are in is unacceptable. Along with dangerously inaccurate advice. It is very obvious this store prioritize sales over animal welfare. The conditions of the animals and the negligence of the two employees, reflect the extreme lack of inadequate management oversight.”
