About Aquarium

Aquarium Knoxville is a family-run institution that has anchored the Knoxville, Tennessee aquatic scene for over 40 years, carrying one of the largest selections of freshwater and saltwater fish in the Southeast. Walk through the doors and you'll find rows of tanks stocked with everything from African cichlids and pea puffers to clownfish, damsels, and coral beauties, alongside a dedicated section for live plants and pond supplies. The store's inventory runs deep.

Longtime customers and fish club members who've visited shops across the country consistently point to its variety as a standout — both in livestock and dry goods. Tanks, filters, and aquatic supplies fill the retail floor, making it a genuine one-stop destination for freshwater community builds, saltwater reef setups, and backyard pond projects alike. Staff knowledge is a frequently praised asset, with several employees demonstrating real passion for aquatic life and a willingness to guide customers through stocking decisions and water chemistry.

The store offers on-site water testing, which many hobbyists rely on for routine check-ins. That said, reviews reveal a pattern worth noting: customer service quality can vary significantly depending on who's working. Some visitors have experienced long waits without acknowledgment, and the store's fish warranty process has drawn pointed criticism from customers who felt the return policy was applied inconsistently or with unnecessary hurdles.

Pricing tends to run on the higher side, which is a common trade-off at independent aquarium shops that invest in livestock health and variety. The fish are generally reported as healthy and well-maintained, though a handful of reviews mention ich outbreaks shortly after purchase — something not uncommon in any store carrying this volume of livestock. For Knoxville aquarists, this store remains a cornerstone.

Its sheer breadth of freshwater, saltwater, and pond offerings under one roof is hard to match in the region. The best approach: go in knowing what you need, don't hesitate to ask for the more experienced staff members, and inspect your fish carefully before buying.

I paid $190 for five fish. My tank was tested the day before and had no problems!!!! Within a week there (quarantine) fish gave my tank ick and killed all but two clowns, a damsel, and a coral Beauty. I called them to see if I could get my money back or in store credit and the guy on the phone basically said tuff luck. Don’t think I will be going back. There was no problem with my tank its water was tested literally the day before (my birthday) and some of the fish I had before are still alive!!! The fish from your store were the only fish that was added for many many months.

STAY AWAY!! (read my response to theirs!) Bought a number of fish from this store and if they die, like ours did, they will not honor their "warranty." Lied to me when I brought the dead fish in (within the time period and all eight died) and water sample. All tests passed but they said the ammonia test was pending to come by the next day because they needed to let the ammonia test go beyond the five minutes you MUST test it at... no more. no less... and see "what happens." They marked it at .25% For that number, the water sample has to turn green at five minutes which it did not. Bull Crud! If the time goes beyond five minutes it invalidates the test. But they INSISTED I was wrong and they are the "experts." Guess all sources on the net AND the test kit manual are wrong lol. Total lies. We test our water every week and tested it before we took the sample in on all their metrics. All was good! Went back in the next day and lied to me again. The water test never went from yellow to green. Totally lied and said it turned green. Then said I had to come in with another water sample to test again (which is NOT stated on their warranty. And why would that matter... they already tested it and the fish are all ready dead lol. Just another hoop they want you to jump through "We wanna make sure all your other fish will be ok. yeah, right. Told them WE test our water and all is well. Like we want our fish to die that we’ve invested so much money in) They want you to give up). Shady bunch of people. We've spent a lot of money with them and when a group of fish (not the others we bought at the same time... all the ones that died came from the same tank) they totally will loose a customer over $50 (their actual cost WAY less) who has spent soooo much money with them. AND they refused... yes, refused... to test the water in front of me from their own tank that the dead fish came from. They tested water from the sink and said this is what it is supposed to look like lol. Good grief lol STAY AWAY!! Used to be good people working there. Not any more. One more note… we found four dead fish Wednesday morning… so I took them with the water sample with me to work. Before I went to the store, my wife found the other four dead ones. When I got to the store, they said I had to come back the next day because the test needed a set for a lot longer (remember five minutes is the limit) and they needed the other fish even though my wife had texted me a photo which I showed them. I said I could FaceTime with my wife and show them the dead fish. Nope! Again fantastic customer service. Again another hoop to unnecessarily jump through. Read my other reviews. Always fair... and the majority always positive. JUST. STAY. AWAY. And my reply to yours: I stand by my word and the lies that were told … it was deceitful not just once but twice. there was nothing wrong with my water! I would not want more fish from you ever. Read my post again. We care about our fish and test our water regularly…. shame on you and your staff for lying to me and for your reply. My reviews are always honest unlike your staff. You cannot gloss over this terrible treatment of a long term customer. Shame on you… post the video of your staff member telling me Wednesday afternoon that the ammonium treatment had to stay a long time longer to fully develop (a lie) and come back the next day. Post the video of your other manager telling me the same thing that going past five minutes does not affect the test (another lie) Post a video of him forcing me to bring in the other dead fish when I offered to FaceTime my wife for her to show them the additional dead fish so I did not have to come back in again. Post a video of the manager saying the ammonia turned green and it did not and then testing sink water instead of agreeing to test the water from the tank itself. He refused to do so on multiple requests. Shame on you. The money isn’t what matters… It’s honoring your commitment to a once valued customer and holding your staff to integrity.

As a customer of this store for more than 20 years and a fish keeper longer, I have to say this is one of the finest stores in the southeast. I regularly attend fish club events around the country, which gives me an opportunity to visit other aquarium stores. I have yet to visit one with as large a variety of both fish and products. Though the store has knowledgeable staff, not all of them are. That's okay. Retail like this often employs younger, part time staff. A thorough understanding of fish keeping doesn't happen overnight, so it's expected that some newer staff won't know everything. Aquarium Knoxville has good people, and it's a solid business. Otherwise, it wouldn't still exist after 40 years. If you aren't happy about something when you visit, let them know. They'll make it right.

I have been waiting to post anything negative about this store, because I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt that any other interaction I have had previously, was due to lack of employees, bad days, etc. However, today was the last straw. I will never go back there. The first incident is when I was in the store looking at fish, and every time I’d go in, I’d love to see the beautiful puffer they had in with the plants. One day I went in, noticed the puffer wasn’t there, and asked about it. I was instantly scoffed at and told he was fed that morning and he was 100% alive. The man was EXTREMELY rude to me. I decided to bring my concern to a lady that worked there, she moved around plants, and sure enough, the puffer was decaying and it was evident it had been doing so for a couple of days. Mind you, the male worker lied and was speechless when he saw the puffer was dead. He didn’t apologize for his behavior or the way he talked to me. That same day, we found a nerite snail on the ground as well and I ended up buying 5 pea puffers, they were puny and malnourished. Shortly after, they all showed signs of ICH and I had to treat them. Call it coincidence… idk. 🤷🏽‍♀️ The next incident was when we went in, we were asking about plants and decided we would pick out some fish. We put our name on the board and waited patiently. The female worker was sitting there talking to a man and his daughter and I finally asked her when she had a chance could we receive help. Mind you, it was only us, and that man and his daughter in the store. She rolled her eyes at me, and came back at me with a snarky remark. Therefore, I didn’t argue back, I just walked away and decided to go to another store. The final incident is today. I decided to try to go in one more time, in hopes that the behavior/attitude would be different. I was wrongly mistaken. We didn’t get greeted. I had to ask where something was to be met with irritation that I even asked. Then, when we cashed out, I noticed that the cup of black worms that we bought, was filled 90% with dead worms. I brought it to the cashier’s attention (I think his name is Scott) and he said they weren’t dead and turned around blatantly ignoring my concern. This type of customer service behavior is disappointing and very unprofessional. I would strongly recommend searching other aquarium stores, where the employees are kind, knowledgeable, and respectful. How this store is even opening and functioning with the way they treat their customers, is astonishing!

Great aquatic section and knowledgeable staff! was very impressed. My one suggestion for improvement concerns the live aquatic plants. Staff should place water in the plant bags to keep them moist and prevent bruising during customer transport. Also, it would be beneficial to add signage clearly indicating that the CPD (Celestial Pearl Danios) are hybrids. Especially for customers who are looking for pure stock.
