About

Birdytown Exotics — now operating as Slytherin Exotics — is an exotic pet shop in Jackson, TN that draws reptile, bird, and small-animal keepers from across West Tennessee, with more than one regular making the hour-plus drive from Memphis to shop here. It's worth setting expectations up front: this is an exotic pet store rather than a dedicated fish store or saltwater aquarium, so freshwater and reef hobbyists won't find rows of tanks here. What you will find is an unusually broad lineup of critters — ball pythons and colubrids, crested geckos and bearded dragons, a standout tarantula and isopod selection, parrots and parrolets, prairie dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, and feeder rats.

Recent visitors have even spotted a sloth and a kangaroo among the displays. Customers in Jackson, TN repeatedly single out the staff — Mary, Niki, and Dustin among them — for being patient, knowledgeable, and happy to let you take your time looking over your options. Reviewers describe the store as clean and well-displayed, with reasonable pricing on exotic pets for sale in Jackson, TN and fresh feeder worms and insects on hand for reptile owners.

The recent rebrand to Slytherin Exotics hasn't changed the friendly, free-roaming-bird atmosphere longtime regulars love. " As with any exotic animal purchase, it pays to look closely. A handful of reviews raise concerns about enclosure sizes and the health of some animals, so prospective buyers are wise to inspect any pet carefully and ask detailed questions about its care and health history before bringing it home.

For Jackson-area keepers hunting hard-to-find reptiles, birds, and exotics, this remains a notable local resource in West Tennessee.

  • “I travel a lot for work, and often find REALLY cool pet shops off the beaten path. I had to go to Memphis this week, and found a place near Jackson called Birdytown Exotics. I took the hr+ drive out of my way to check it out. It is now called Slitherin' Exotics. Despite saying they were open until 6pm on the web as well as on the door, they were closed when I got there at 5:03pm. Decided to give them the benefit of the doubt, and went back tosay on my return trip home. They were open. I REALLY want to leave a better review, because they had some neat stuff, including some pretty neat colubrids. Most of the snakes, while in racks, were housed adequately. Everything else....well, let me start by saying that I understand you only have so much shelf space in a pet store, and you often house animals in a bit smaller than needed enclosure to maximize shelf space, with the expectation that whoever buys the animal will offer proper care. Seeing adult Beardies in enclosures that won't even let them straighten their tail was disheartening, and seeing the huge amount of crested geckos in 8x8x12in enclosure was disheartening, but seeing them sell full 8x8x12in enclosure as a crested gecko setup? Even by lousy husbandry standards that is a fraction of the space needed. They did have a pretty amazing tarantula selection, and all looked well cared for. They also had a pretty good isopod selection, and I would have spend some good coin on a few things I don't have, but every more rare/higher end isopod was in a cup that looked like it hadn't been sprayed in weeks, to the point that the sphagnum was crumbly, and all I could find in the cups were dead isopods. There was only one employee, and other than telling my I could open the tarantula case to get a better look, he did not interact with me, and seemed not to care that I was in the store at all, not even commenting when, 5ft away,I started opening isopod tubs and digging through them. I was so so disappointed. I thought I had found another hidden gem, turns out it was just coal.”

  • “I purchased three pet rats from this store, and unfortunately all of them were seriously ill. They had lice, ringworm, and upper respiratory infections, and one passed away shortly after I brought him home due to respiratory complications. While I can’t speak to the condition of their other animals, based on my experience I would strongly caution anyone considering buying rats or other rodents here—whether as pets or feeders. I was able to treat the lice, but the ringworm spread to me, my husband, and even our dog. Four months later, we are still dealing with it because of how contagious and difficult it is to eliminate. During my visit, I also saw a dead animal in one of the enclosures, which in hindsight was a major red flag. My surviving rats are still experiencing mild respiratory issues despite multiple rounds of treatment. Overall, this experience has been emotionally, physically, and financially exhausting, and I highly recommend looking elsewhere for healthy animals.”
