About
Critter Mart & More is a locally owned pet and fish store in Watertown, South Dakota, run by owner LeAnn — a familiar name to just about every animal lover in town. Part neighborhood pet shop, part community hub, it packs a lot under one roof: birds, small mammals, reptiles, dogs, cats, and a freshwater fish section that draws local hobbyists. Regulars describe walking in to a smile at the door, and LeAnn is the kind of owner who remembers customers by name and clearly cares about the animals in her keeping.
On the aquarium side, this is a freshwater fish store at heart. Shoppers come in for bettas and corydoras (cory catfish), and LeAnn is hands-on with tank compatibility questions, the do's and don'ts of stocking a community tank, and special-ordering specific fish through her distributors when they aren't on hand. If you're hunting for freshwater fish for sale in Watertown, SD, or just want a second opinion before adding to your tank, the counter here will happily talk it through — the sort of personal help you rarely get at a big-box store.
" The birds — among them a striking macaw that greets you near the entrance — are a longtime draw, and LeAnn is well known for taking in surrendered and seized animals, getting them vet care, and working to find them forever homes. It's a small, sometimes crowded independent store, not a high-volume chain, and a handful of visitors have flagged concerns about livestock conditions — so it's worth giving any fish or animal a personal once-over before you buy. For Watertown residents who want freshwater fish advice, feeder bugs, pet supplies, and the kind of hometown service a locally owned shop can offer, Critter Mart & More remains a Watertown fixture.

“LeAnne is the best! The first time I met her, I was in a bind and needed help hand-feeding my baby Green Cheek Conures while attending my son's JV State Hockey Tournament. Without hesitation, she stepped in and took over the feedings so I could enjoy watching his game. Since then, whenever I've needed advice or guidance, she has always been willing to help. Her knowledge, kindness, and dedication are truly remarkable. You can tell she genuinely cares about every animal in her care. She even takes in surrendered animals and works hard to find them loving forever homes. It's rare to find someone with such a big heart and commitment to the well-being of animals. I can't recommend LeAnne enough! ❤️🦜”

— Brittany Seehafer5.02 weeks ago“I loved to visit critter mart almost every week, but then I moved back to Minnesota. Leann is beyond wonderful and is so welcoming! She creates such a fun environment to be in for customers and the animals. She is also a joy to talk to! We appreciate everything you do! I cannot wait to visit Watertown again and go to critter mart!”
— Lily Ekre5.02 weeks ago“I visit critter Mart here and there. She knows everything about bearded dragons and is an expert. Best damn dubia roaches in Watertown too, always a good supply of feeder bugs. Awesome staff and the place although a bit crowded, is always clean and a smile as soon as you walk in the door.”

— Lisha Keown5.0Edited 2 weeks ago“This is a great, hometown, friendly, pet store, where the owner and the employees care for the animals there and the people who come to shop, visit, and enjoy being able to interact with the pets there. This is NOT a pet ranch or a high volumn pets mart… The negative reviews are most likely from people who shop at a high volume pet ranch’s and don’t understand the difference between small, independent places like Critter Mart… The dogs are friendly, the large macaw at the entrance is a beautiful bird, and its demeanor is clearly posted with signs in pain English… The dogs are friendly and perceptive. They love attention and affection. My granddaughter and I love Critter Mart…”
— Chuck Olson5.02 weeks ago“The store smelled horrible. Animals that are clearly too young to be sold were in cages, one animal that bites was able to freely roam. This store clearly needs better ownership & managers. One owner had their personal pet outside in 80+ degree weather with a bucket of water that had dead bugs floating in it. Go to Caleb’s in Aberdeen, SD. MUCH better place.”
— Eryn Kvernevig1.02 weeks ago“As the only place in Watertown to get stuff for my geckos, I’d say they always have what you’re looking for. LeAnn (not sure if it’s spelled like that- so sorry!) remembers her customers by name & is very knowledgeable on the animals she has.”
— Marley Phillips4.03 weeks ago“My family and I enjoyed the friendly customer service from the very first day we visited. Our son Justin has bought, and now raises a bearded dragon which whom he adores. The employees at the Critters Mart are very helpful. We appreciate being able to walk about the store and see the different types of animals that are being housed there. 😁”
