OSA Aquarium Superstore & Services in Coventry, Rhode Island is a large-format aquarium shop that stocks both freshwater and saltwater livestock alongside a substantial dry goods and equipment inventory. The store's layout is clean and organized, making it easy to browse row after row of tanks spanning cichlids, corals, discus, pufferfish, and more. The freshwater side is where OSA really shines.
Multiple reviewers single out the cichlid selection — particularly African cichlids — as a standout. One longtime discus keeper recounted how staffer James walked her through the transition to African cichlids with such thorough knowledge of water quality, diet, and compatibility that the switch felt effortless. That kind of hands-on guidance, where staff explain the reasoning behind every recommendation rather than simply pushing product, is a recurring theme in positive reviews.
Another staffer, Fletcher, earned praise for patiently helping a couple set up their very first freshwater tank from scratch. The saltwater coral selection draws attention too, with reviewers noting an excellent variety, though some experienced reefers have flagged concerns about pricing and occasional pest issues like bubble algae and aiptasia on coral frags. Live rock availability and saltwater livestock overall seem more limited compared to the freshwater offerings.
On the retail side, OSA carries a wide range of aquariums, equipment, accessories, and live plants — essentially a one-stop shop for tank builds. Pricing is a polarizing topic; several reviewers feel markups run significantly above market rate on both livestock and equipment, while others consider the quality and service worth the premium. The store operates best when its knowledgeable staff are engaged, and experiences can vary depending on who's working the floor.
When you connect with someone like James or Fletcher, the consultation-level expertise elevates the visit well beyond a typical pet store run. For freshwater hobbyists in Rhode Island — especially those drawn to cichlids or looking to set up a new tank with real guidance — OSA Aquarium Superstore is a substantial destination worth the drive to Coventry.

A very nice store, very clean, well organized and generally a friendly staff except for a small select few. However, prices are extremely high and frankly a bit unaffordable. I've posted a couple pics for comparison, unfortunately I cant find another picture in my phone that I had taken from another local business. About 3 visits ago, I was treated with a very unprofessional and snobby attitude by one of the staff. I decided to just let it go and avoid that member the next time I visited for another purchase. That visit was perfectly pleasant! This past visit, I noticed the price on an item that I needed was unbelievably ridiculous and marked up atleast 100% more than anywhere else. That was very disappointing, and I had made my decision that I would never again step foot within that establishment.

I used to really like this place, the prices are getting too high, but not just that. They’re starting to not care about there quality. Too many corals covered in bubble algae, aptasia, and red cyano algae. Plus there’s tanks that are broken that aren’t fixed. The owners never at this store anymore. And some of the workers just work they aren’t informed on really anything. Before everyone you talked to had knowledge of the hobby, now forget it…I asked one question about a product they were selling and the guy flat out said ummm yeah I don’t know. It’s just sad cause it was a very nice spot it’s just kind of being forgotten about.

I have been into this store twice in the past 3 weeks looking to make a purchase. The first time I was the only customer in the store and no employees acknowledged me. So after doing a loop through the store and looking at all of the fish I left. Then today I went in looking to purchase some cichlids. There was an employee helping another customer so I poked around. After about 10-15 mins another employee asked me if I was all set. I told him what I was there to purchase. He suggested I wait for the employee who had been helping someone else out with fish. I waited for a total of 30-40 mins and ended up having to leave again. I see such good reviews but I have yet to see why on my only 2 visits. I’m not sure I will be giving it a third try.

Fabulously expensive all around, equipment and livestock. Most of the staff seemed uninterested in interacting. Addendum... No wonder they went OOB.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (If I could give 10 stars, I would!) I recently visited OSA Aquarium Superstore & Services – Coventry, RI, and let me just say it was worth every penny and more. The level of customer service, knowledge, and genuine care we received was truly outstanding. My husband and I were helped by James, a young man whose expertise and patience made our decision smooth and easy. He answered every single question with confidence and clarity, and his knowledge of fish, water quality, food, and products was nothing short of impressive. It honestly felt like we had our own personal Google right there with us. I’ve had discus fish my entire life and never imagined switching. But thanks to James, I now have African cichlids and I absolutely love them. They’re vibrant, full of personality, and with his guidance, the transition felt effortless. What impressed us most was that nothing was ever “sold” to us. Instead, James explained everything with facts, reasons, and genuine care for both the fish and the customer. That kind of honesty and passion is rare, and it makes all the difference. To the owner or manager: you should be extremely proud to have James on your team. His skill, passion, and dedication are what make customers like us not only buy but keep coming back. If there were an option for 10 stars, I would’ve chosen it without hesitation.
