About

Little Rivers Aquatics is a small but seriously cared-for freshwater fish store in Bristol, Rhode Island, run by owners Paul and Jacob. It may be compact in footprint, but it punches well above its size: reviewers consistently note that every tank is clean and every fish looks healthy, exactly the conditions that keep local fishkeepers coming back. Cichlids are the clear standout.

If you've been searching for cichlids for sale near me, the colorful selection earns repeat praise, with one show-tank enthusiast singling out the quality of the cichlid stock. Alongside them you'll find betta fish housed the right way, in proper 5-gallon tanks rather than the cramped cups chain stores use, plus bristlenose plecos and a rotating mix of the unusual, hard-to-find freshwater species that reward an in-person visit over a click. For freshwater fish for sale in Bristol, RI, it's a genuine local alternative to the big-box pet aisle.

What really sets the shop apart is the personal touch. Paul is the kind of owner who will sit with a first-time fishkeeper, walk them through a low-maintenance family setup, and make sure they leave with the right organisms for their tank. When one family came in with their two kids after work, Paul and Jacob helped them build a beginner tank from scratch and turned it into a lesson.

That hands-on consultation and tank-setup help is a recurring theme across nearly every review. Can't find a specific fish? Paul and Jacob will custom-order it for you, sourcing specialty species that aren't currently swimming in the tanks, so you're never limited to what's in stock that day.

For anyone in the Bristol area looking for a freshwater fish store with healthy livestock, honest guidance, and reasonable prices, Little Rivers Aquatics offers the old-school experience where the owner knows your tank almost as well as you do.

  • “Love this place! Looking forward to going back again and again high quality stuff for us saltwater fish hobbyists but have an amazing selection of freshwater stuff as well. To those who haven't had the time to check this place out get over there as soon as you can!”

  • “Looked nice inside but was closed at 3:00 and we drove 45+ minutes to come here. We couldn't wait around for another 45 minutes which is when the "be right back at 3:45" sign said. Wished we could've come in. We don't get to head to Rhode Island often.”

  • “The owner Paul is a lovely man. It is clear he is incredibly knowledgeable and caring about the fish and other creatures in the store, he will make sure each customer is buying the best and correct organisms for personal tanks. Great connections to community and the best place to go to get fish. He is patient with each customer, even those with beginner tanks and is willing to explain what each customer needs for their best tank. Best place to go to get fish in healthy conditions as well. Could not recommend more!”

  • “I went to this store and bought 1 male bushy nose pleco with blue eyes. Mind you I have had this one tank up and running for 5 years perfectly fine no disease. I added this fish (75 gallon tank tempered to the water and drip acclimated water was tested) I am ontop of my tanks because I run a buisness myself. I bought this pleco to pair with my female. And now half of my fish are dead… the owner will not respond and clearly is not taking acknowledgement for this. I suggest you take your buisness elsewhere. Like fish bowl in Fall River or Petco in north Dartmouth because this establishment is unreliable.”

  • “Visited LRA today and met Paul. A nice clean, little - May I say "concise" - aquarium shop. All the animals are healthy, and Paul is knowledgeable. Unlike the chains, they are willing to order specialty items for you. I give LRA two thumbs up 🙂”
