About
Tucked into Prospect Park, Pennsylvania, Mini Reef has become one of the Delaware County area's most respected aquarium shops, anchored by owner Sal's genuine passion for the hobby. Despite its name suggesting a saltwater-only operation, the store serves both saltwater and freshwater enthusiasts — a fact that pleasantly surprises first-time visitors who walk in expecting only reef tanks. The saltwater side is where Mini Reef truly shines.
The store carries a rotating selection of corals — customers mention picking up hammer frags and coralline scrapings — along with marine fish and invertebrates displayed in vivid reef setups that double as demonstrations of what Sal can build. Coral pricing gets consistently high marks, and Sal will carefully package frags for customers driving from as far as an hour away. For freshwater folks, there are live plants, kuhli loaches, freshwater shrimp available by special order, and even a koi pond out back that kids love visiting and feeding.
The store also stocks axolotls with full care guidance, water conditioners, pellets, and other essentials. Sal readily places special orders for anything not on the shelves, making the smaller footprint feel much larger in practice. What sets Mini Reef apart is the consultation experience.
Sal has a reputation for sitting with customers well past closing time, walking them through their first saltwater setup, explaining upgrade paths for turtle tanks, or simply fielding a stream of beginner questions without a hint of impatience. Multiple reviewers mention feeling comfortable asking anything — a stark contrast to the big-box experience. He's even offered to come help with home setups.
The shop has a warm, intimate character, complete with a vocal pet bird named Sunshine and the occasional reptile sighting. Hours can be limited, so plan accordingly, but the trip is well worth it for anyone in the greater Philadelphia area looking for quality livestock, fair prices, and the kind of one-on-one guidance that turns curiosity into a lifelong hobby.

Sal (owner) went out of his way explaining every detail of what I need and eve offering to come help if needed. Sal is extremely passionate about what he does. He’s a wealth of knowledge and will sit there and answer every question you have and eve when the store closes at 7 he will still sit there and answer any questions. He has a very nice variety of dis and supplies and will order you something if he doesn’t have it. He also doesn’t make you feel pressured to just buy things from his store. He really does go out of his way for his customers. This place is a diamond in the rough. I strongly recommend going to Mini reef if you want to learn this hobby. Thank you Sal taking the time to really explain things to me. I will forever be a customer.”

The store owner was extremely helpful and welcoming and very knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the hobby. He definitely gained me as a customer and I would gladly give him my business over a big chain store. Can't wait to come back to get my sons aquarium started!!”
