Tucked into the small town of Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, Elite Menagerie Habitats is the kind of fish store that inspires two-hour drives and repeat pilgrimages. Owner Louise runs the operation largely on her own, and the results speak volumes — reviewers consistently marvel at how every single tank in this densely packed shop is immaculately clean, a feat that borders on superhuman given the sheer number of setups lining the walls. The freshwater selection runs deep and diverse.
Customers have picked up everything from albino corydoras and vampire shrimp to apistogramma pairs and rainbowfish, alongside a rotating inventory of rare and hard-to-find species that keeps seasoned hobbyists coming back. Live plants are a major draw as well, with beautifully scaped natural display tanks offering instant inspiration. The store stocks Aquarium Co-Op products and other supplies, and Louise is known to special-order fish she doesn't currently have in stock.
What truly sets Elite Menagerie apart is Louise's hands-on expertise and transparent approach. She walks customers through care requirements, compatibility, and tank sizing with genuine enthusiasm — whether someone is setting up their first 20-gallon or sourcing centerpiece fish for an established collection. Her quarantine procedures are thorough and she's happy to explain them in detail over the phone or via email.
One customer ordered 29 fish shipped across the state and lost only one — a testament to her packing and livestock quality. The store also operates an online shop with shipping, and communication around orders is consistently praised as prompt and detailed. Louise has held fish from sale so customers could compare pairs in person, adjusted orders based on sex ratios, and generally treated every transaction like it matters.
Don't let the unassuming exterior or the door that sticks in winter fool you — step inside and you'll find a dense, thriving aquatic world maintained with obsessive care. The prices are consistently described as beyond reasonable, making the drive from New Jersey, the Lehigh Valley, or anywhere in eastern Pennsylvania well worth the trip.

Absolutely worth the drive from NJ! The trip there was beautiful, and the shop itself did not disappoint. The selection is huge with so many great options to choose from. The owner and employees were friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely enjoyable to talk with. You can tell they truly care about their customers along with the care of the aquatic life! This shop is well worth the trip, and we won’t be going anywhere else. P.S. if you visit them during the winter, kick the door — it will open 😉

Don’t let the outside fool you. This is one fully stocked fish store. Even with the effort to park and get in you will be surprised at what you see when you get in. It’s amazing tanks upon tanks upon tanks in there and not a single one looking nasty and unkept. This is not a mega mart by any means but if you’re looking for a good selection of fish, plants and supporting materials you should be able to find what you need here. It an honest to goodness fish store. On top of that you get Louise (owner) and you’ll find that she’ll do whatever she can to make sure you get what you need for your aquarium. I’ve never been in a fish store with this many tanks and all of them clean. And she does it all on her own. Elite Managerie Habitats is off the beaten path but well worth the hour drive that the wife and i took to get there. Thanks Louise was a pleasure to meet you.

I made a large online order to be shipped across the state, and I had a wonderful experience. They have a very large selection of aquatic animals, including a lot of rare or hard to find species. Do not hesitate to go here, whether it be for an online order or in-person. As an experienced hobbyist, I talked at great length with the owner of the store and I can honestly say she is incredibly knowledgeable, honest, and genuinely cares about the animals she sells. Her pricing was fair, communication top notch, and out of 29 fish only one was DOA. Even as the aquarium hobby is becoming more popular, it's unfortunately rare to find a fish store that will give you accurate and appropriate information, and yet Elite Menagerie Habitats stands out by maintaining a higher level of integrity when it comes to their animals and customers. I wouldn't hesitate to source more livestock from her in the future.

My partner & I have recently gotten into aquariums and the hobby as whole. We came across this store on Google one day and decided to come in. It was an instant connection, the woman who owns it is a very kind, helpful and funny person who you just feel comfortable with. We’ve purchased albino Cory’s, snails, plants, vampire shrimp and so much more from her. This is an exceptional store and an amazing time every time we visit. She takes phenomenal care of her tanks and has very reasonable prices, don’t get me started on the variety - actually amazing. We look forward to visiting as much as we can. I’d give 10/5 stars if I could.

Absolute best fish store in the area I found. Staff is completely knowledgeable, tanks and setups were exceptionally clean and well taken care of. Perfect example of how a small business aquatic pet store should be. Can't wait to go back. And prices are beyond reasonable!! Had just what I was looking for and and so much more.. You wish you had more money to spend..

After reading the one star reviews out of curiosity, I could only sit here in wonder over how absolutely shitty those customers must have been. I almost never review a retail shop, either positively or negatively, but my experience at the shop was truly top notch. To get to the store is about a two hour drive, so I sent a message to them requesting information about their quarantine procedures and received a call back response within a couple hours. She walked me through all of the details pertaining to their receiving, treatment, and quarantine procedures and answered any questions I had about the species I was interested in. First thing in the morning, she emailed me to let me know that the sex ratio she had available for rainbowfish was no where close to what I requested. In that exchange, I asked if she could hold off on packaging the apistogramma pair I had ordered, as I was second guessing my choice and wanted to look at the other pairs I had considered. Not only was she amenable to holding off on prepping them, she offered to hold the other pair from sale as well until I could look at them both a few hours later. During my time at the store she was incredibly friendly to myself and my daughter as well as answered every question I had with attention and detail. The shop is very well taken care of with the cleanest tanks I have seen in any of the shops I frequent, the livestock and plant selection were large and diverse, all the fish I purchased were vibrant and healthy, and the prices were very reasonable. It is clear that she is less a business owner, and more a passionate hobbiest who cares deeply for the quality of her animals and has found a way to make that passion a living. Were I to move even farther away, I can honestly say that I would make the drive for any new tank or centerpiece fish I want to add in the future.
