About
The Fish Room is one of Raleigh's largest aquarium stores, and walking in feels like stepping into a superstore — long aisles of freshwater and saltwater tanks, a wall of live plants, and a clean, well-organized layout that regulars say invites an afternoon of browsing. Since relocating to its space off Capital Blvd, the shop has added touches like an ocean-themed floor and a dedicated aquascaping area with plastic tank-size mats for laying out a scape on-site. It's also dog-friendly.
On the freshwater side, the selection runs from tetras, plecos, and snails to a standout group of healthy live plants. Discus keepers have a real ally here: longtime regular Doug credits Ben, Rachel, and Dante with dialing in the water conditions for his discus, and staff routinely walk owners through care for unusual additions like African dwarf frog tadpoles. If you're hunting discus for sale in Raleigh, NC, or stocking a planted tank, this is a natural first stop.
The saltwater and reef section is just as deep. Shoppers leave with clownfish, hermit crabs, soft and LPS corals, live rock, and the occasional tang or Valentini puffer, and staff like Rick, Kyle, and Daniel clearly enjoy coaching first-time reef keepers. One hobbyist drove ninety minutes back after buying an as-is protein skimmer and got patient, video-call help assembling it; another was sent home with a styrofoam box to keep new clownfish stable on a long drive.
You'll also find a well-regarded frozen and fish-food aisle plus deep dry-goods and equipment shelves, and the store offers tank setup, consultation, and aquascaping help. Feedback on livestock health is mixed — some buyers have reported ich or losses and wished for more generous returns — but across 700-plus reviews the consensus tilts firmly positive. For sheer selection, many regulars still call this the best fish store in the RDU area.

Customer reviews
“Ben, Rachel ,Dante, are amazingly knowledgeable, and really made a difference in helping me create the best fresh water tank conditions for my Discus fish this past year...Always a pleasure, and great experience with every visit, as I frequent here 2x weekly. Keep up the great job, this is one of the best experiences Ive had after visiting many fish stores in NC.”
— Doug Fischer5.0a day ago“We recently bought a school of tetras and otos from here for our new freshwater tank. Less then a week in, over half the fish are DEAD. Our tank had been cycling out for over a month. All parameters are great, and to top it off the shrimp we purchased else where are all thriving, in the same tank. DON'T BUY FISH FROM HERE! ITS A WASTE!”
— Danielle Carothers1.0a day ago“Lately, the fish at this store have looked unhealthy, and I've seen multiple tanks with dead fish. I also had a very disappointing experience after purchasing fish there. Within three days, I lost hundreds of dollars' worth of livestock. When I called, I had to repeatedly ask the manager what the store would do to make things right. It wasn't until I directly asked, "So you guys don't do anything when a customer loses hundreds of dollars' worth of fish within three days?" that he finally told me I could bring my receipt. Even then, they wouldn't offer a refund—only store credit. Based on the condition of the fish and the way my situation was handled, I won't be purchasing livestock from this store again.”
— Erick Haro1.0a day ago“Super friendly and helpful staff. Gorgeous shop and aquariums. Great selection of healthy aquatic plants. Plus, they’re dog friendly!”

— Jacob Sterling5.0a month ago“Enjoy going here. Wish they had some more variety of freshwater fish. You really in see the typical ones that most stores carry. Regardless, best fish store in RDU.”
— Jacob Eccles5.0a month ago“Very helpful staff and good selection. This place really cares about their customers and fish.”
— Dylan Buyrn5.0a month ago“Visited The Fish Room in Raleigh off Capital Blvd and had a great experience. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. The store was very clean, and I loved the ocean-themed floor design — such a cool touch. All of the fish looked healthy and well cared for, and everything in the store was organized and spotless. Definitely a great place for anyone into aquariums or fish keeping. Highly recommend checking them out!”
— Elizabeth Cash5.0a month ago“Got an albino pleco from them about one week ago and it is covered in ick. Killed all of the tetras in the tank we put him in. The team is very knowledgeable but may be skipping steps when it comes to fish care.”
