About Under The Sea Aquarium Marketplace

Under The Sea Aquarium Marketplace in Monroe, North Carolina has built a devoted following that regularly drives over an hour to shop there — and it's not hard to see why. Led by Matt and a team that includes standout staff members like Hlib, Maya, Trevor, Scott, and Nate, the store combines a deep freshwater and saltwater livestock selection with the kind of personalized, unhurried customer service that turns first-time visitors into regulars. The saltwater side is a real draw, with corals including Goniopora, anemones, clownfish, and coral banded shrimp among the offerings.

Freshwater enthusiasts will find a strong variety as well, with angelfish and species that customers say they can't locate anywhere else. Hlib, described by one reviewer as a self-proclaimed 'aquatics nerd,' is known for sourcing exciting and hard-to-find fish, and for knowing the compatibility and care requirements of every species he brings in. The live plant selection rounds out the livestock inventory alongside invertebrates like crabs, snails, and starfish.

Beyond retail, Under The Sea runs a serious tank maintenance and setup operation. Service technicians like Scott and Nate handle everything from scheduled water changes and UV filter cleaning to full tank relocations — one customer had an entire tank moved between properties with all livestock surviving. Matt's team has earned particular trust for emergency interventions, stepping in to rescue neglected tanks and nursing stressed livestock back to health.

The store stocks a solid range of equipment, foods, and accessories, and staff will special order anything they don't carry. Multiple reviewers highlight the team's honesty — they'll actively talk customers out of purchases that could harm their tanks rather than push unnecessary products. The atmosphere is clean, well-organized, and welcoming, with clearly labeled tanks that make browsing easy.

Staff are patient with newcomers and deeply knowledgeable for experienced hobbyists. For aquarium keepers in the Monroe area and well beyond, Under The Sea has become a destination worth the drive.

We just started out in the aquarium hobby and we have been a few places. Literally all under sea staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. They take good care of the fish. I’m excited to keep coming to under the sea and eventually double my saltwater tank and get more fish from them

This place is pretty cool. They get some really nice fish and the customer service is always great. They have a younger female that usually catches fish for me (sorry but can't remember name). She is always very pleasant and goes out of her way to make sure everyone is getting taken care of and is very knowledgeable.

Always helpful, walked in on a Monday during their store service by mistake not realizing they were closed. They still helped me out with what I needed when they didn’t have to since technically they are closed. Will frequent the store more often now and thanks again for everyone being helpful.

My husband and I are just getting back into the aquarium hobby and we discovered Under the Sea sort of by accident. Best accident ever. We have discovered the best aquatics instructor ever! By his very own definition he's an aquatics nerd and he makes everything about aquatics and the hobby accessible to everyone. He never makes you feel stupid for what you don't know, He's never rushed, And when you leave you are armed with everything you need to know, plus a bottomless resource of knowledge whenever you enter the store. We are freshwater people to start with, with salt water somewhere in our future and their selections are wonderful and healthy. Hlib is totally invested in ordering exciting fish and he knows where to get them, where they're from, which species are good together and how to care for them. It's amazing! We love this place and Hlib in particular. The store stocks all the supplies that you need, and if they don't have it they'll order it.
