About

Dubey's Pet World is a long-running, independently owned pet shop in Graham, NC, and while it's best known as an exotic-animal store, it keeps a working fish section that makes it a handy local stop for aquarium keepers. Walk in and you'll find rows of freshwater tanks alongside birds, reptiles, and small mammals — the kind of menagerie that has kept families coming back for decades. Several reviewers say they've shopped here since childhood, and one regular rides in all the way from Chapel Hill just to browse the animals.

On the aquatic side, the store stocks affordable freshwater fish, with guppies and other livebearers as the bread-and-butter livestock. If you're hunting for inexpensive guppies for sale in Graham, NC without driving to a bigger city, this is one of the few independent options around. The shop also keeps a saltwater section with marine tanks and sells RODI water by the gallon, so both freshwater and saltwater fishkeepers can pick up livestock and supplies in person on the same trip as bird feed, crickets, or reptile gear.

The staff are the most consistently praised part of the experience. " The store also offers layaway, a welcome touch for a non-franchise shop. It's a place that generates strong opinions, so it's fair to set expectations: pricing (especially on birds) runs high, and some recent reviewers have flagged tank upkeep and cleanliness and urged the owners to tighten up maintenance.

Others counter that the animals are well kept and the staff genuinely care. As a fish store, Dubey's works best for Graham-area hobbyists who want an in-person, browse-the-aisles experience and affordable freshwater starters close to home — shop cats roaming the aisles included.

Customer reviews

  • “Great people, great customer service, wide variety of pets including exotic animals and insects. Even when I'm there only to buy feeder insects for my reptiles, I always want to look around at all the animals, reptiles and insects... and I always pet the store kitties (not for sale.. I've asked. Lol).”

  • “A lot of different pets to choose from, but this place is in serious need of thorough cleaning and likely a health inspection. On the day I visited, the level of ammonia smell in the air was unbearable, leaving my nose, eyes and lungs burning. I can't imagine how this affects the animals, especially the birds as they are very sensitive to smells. I felt really bad for them but what can you do. Im sure those who work there, can't tell for themselves after being exposed for so long. They really need to go through this place and clean and get everything in proper order especially whatever is producing the overbearing ammonia smell.”

  • “Red flags in a pet store include unsanitary living conditions, lethargic or sick animals, lack of verifiable health records, and pushy sales tactics, and no health warranty. High-quality pet retailers prioritize transparency, proper socialization, and ethical sourcing, whereas problematic stores often cut corners to maximize profits. Dubey’s checks every box for a red flagged pet store. You’d be better off going to Petsmart or literally anywhere else. The owners responses to some of these negative reviews show a lack of empathy, and overall care for these poor animals. Defensiveness is a usual sign of knowingly doing wrong, but refusing to accept it. Are you protecting yourself or the animals lives in your care. Seriously dude, fix the issues addressed here or you may face penalty. The employees appeared to be inebriated and looked just as sick as the animals dying here. Each time I visit this store, they look more visibly run down, overcrowded, and the overwhelming smell of piss gets stronger. Sad because I love animals, but hate the cruelty. I welcome Bradley’s response to this so I can hear more entertaining excuses. In the meantime, I’m calling PETA and you should call a lawyer.”

  • “BUYER BEWARE!!!!! I purchased a baby rex rat 10 days ago from this establishment and he is already DEAD. As soon as I walked in the doors of this place, I noticed that a lot of the animals looked sickly. Birds that were extremely stressed and had plucked their feathers out, animals that were overcrowded in small cages, etc. but I was determined to find my forever pet here, being that they had a good selection. I didn’t see a rat that I wanted so an employee brought a tiny rat from the back of the store (he wasn’t on display like the other rats) and I instantly fell in love with him. He was a mostly hairless Rex rat and he was sweet. We brought him home and set him up in an immaculate, large cage and he was doing okay. However, I noticed that in the following days, he was having breathing issues, was rubbing his nose and face constantly, etc. so I did some research and it seemed that he may have a respiratory infection. I made a vet appointment, but before I could get him there, I just found him dead in his cage. I AM WRITING THIS SO I CAN SAVE SOMEONE FROM BEING DEVASTATED AND HEARTBROKEN LIKE ME. THEY DONT HAVE A WARRANTY ON THESE SMALL ANIMALS FOR A REASON. PLEASE DO NOT BUY PETS FROM HERE!!!!!!!”

  • “Totally the best pet shop in the area”

  • “While they had a lot of options as far as pets go all of the animals were kept in horrible conditions. ALL of the enclosures look like they haven’t been touched/cleaned in months and the smell of urine is overwhelming as soon as you walk in the store. I’d imagine a majority of these animals will also come with health issues.”
