About
The Fish Room is an independent aquarium store tucked into Saltbox Village on Kildaire Farm Road in Cary, NC, and it has earned a loyal following among Triangle-area hobbyists who happily drive past other shops to get here. Walk in and you'll find rows of well-tended tanks spanning both freshwater and saltwater systems, which is part of why regulars treat it as a genuine one-stop shop. On the freshwater side, customers come for everything from bettas and schooling nano fish to plecos, shrimp, and African cichlids — one recent visitor picked up an electric blue acara and a pearl gourami and reported both thriving at home.
If you're searching for African cichlids or freshwater community fish for sale in Cary, NC, this is a reliable local stop. The saltwater section draws particular praise: reviewers describe healthy marine fish, stunning live corals, and unique invertebrates kept in clean, clearly cared-for displays. First-time reef keepers single out staff like Patrick for patient, no-pressure guidance, and owner Mike earns repeat shout-outs for being knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about the hobby.
The team here are actual fishkeepers who will talk through water chemistry, stocking compatibility, or a 75-gallon build without ever turning it into an upsell. Beyond livestock, the shop carries a strong live plant selection — long praised for quality and value — along with hardscape, frozen foods, water conditioners, test kits, lighting, and filtration, so you rarely leave needing one more thing. Pond keepers will also find koi and pond fish available in Cary, NC.
One fair-minded note: some customers have reported fish passing in the first week or arriving with ich, and the betta display has drawn criticism for small bowls. Inspect livestock closely, ask about recent arrivals, and lean on the staff's advice — it is freely given. For Cary aquarists who value an in-person fish store with engaged people and real selection, The Fish Room remains a Triangle favorite well worth the visit.

Customer reviews
“We love this fish store. The staff is always so nice and knowledgeable. They pay attention to their customers, get to know them and their tanks. They make recommendations based on what you're looking for but also based on what's appropriate for your tank. We drive past multiple fish stores to go to this one. Hands down a great shop. Would highly recommend.”
— Jill Browne5.0Edited 2 hours ago“We frequent the Raleigh fish room and love it! We have multiple tanks in our house and are very loyal customers. I was in Cary, and had to get some general items so I went to that location. I was absolutely appalled by how they care for their betta fish. They are kept in bowls the size of a baseball and are left to float as they don't even have enough space to truly swim. Many were in poor condition with clamped fins and some possible fin rot. At the very least, the Raleigh location keeps their bettas in filtered, heated water. An aquatic store should know this is the bare minimum for betta fish. What makes this even worse is that the Cary fish room SELLS bettas in these bowls leading the community to believe that this is appropriate and ethical fish care. Super disappointed and truthfully grossed out by this. I will not be returning and highly encourage them to do research on how to best care for betta fish. In general, this location does not have a wide variety of fish or plants either.”
— sara sison1.0a week ago“Hit or miss. I’ve bought a bunch of fish across the Raleigh area and whenever I buy fish from here a few always seem to pass within a few days. Also bought fish here that gave my tank the Ich and I am currently combatting that hoping it doesn’t kill my whole tank. I’ve lost about 9 fish. The staff were helpful in providing some store credit (unfortunately it’s on livestock only) and recommending a Ich solution. They have a good selection of products, but I personally plan on avoiding purchasing livestock here in the future. Editing review since they were helpful although the final results of the Ich are yet to be seen.”

— Nick Olivares5.0a month ago“Would not generally recommend. Have bought multiple sick fish and shrimp here, and their plants started my bladder snail infestation. Fish are somehow always overcrowded and also out of stock. Staff is eager to help but not always knowledgeable. Would recommend their selection of hardscape, but the quality of fish combined with their return policy makes it hard to recommend anything else. Also, it seems like much of their website is AI generated.”
— Kylan Schatz2.0a month ago“I’ve had a fantastic experience at The Fish Room in Cary! I’ve purchased 7 fish from here so far. The owner, Mike is amazing—super knowledgeable, helpful, and clearly passionate about what they do. They take the time to answer questions and make sure you’re set up for success, which really sets this place apart. If you’re looking for quality fish and expert advice, I highly recommend checking them out!”
— Arshdeep Kaur5.0a month ago“Very friendly and helpful staff who are willing to talk through tank set-up ideas and answer questions in a way that doesn't feel like a sales pitch or up-sell.”
— Nick5.02 months ago“Friendly and informative staff. I asked for 6 snails. He gave me 8 and charged me for one. The selection seems really good. *the Betta display at this location is not as good as the Raleigh location in my opinion, but I noticed they don't seem to keep very many bettas at once.”
— Madison Ashworth5.02 months ago“If you are an aquarium hobbyist in the Triangle, The Fish Room in Cary (located in Saltbox Village) is an absolute treasure. It’s one of the few independent shops that truly understands the balance between high-quality livestock and expert customer education. Unmatched Selection: Saltwater & Freshwater Whether you are maintaining a delicate reef tank or a vibrant freshwater community, their inventory is impressive. Saltwater & Coral: Their saltwater section is consistently top-tier, featuring healthy fish, stunning live corals, and unique invertebrates. The tanks are clearly well-cared-for, which gives you peace of mind when bringing a new addition home. Freshwater Variety: From beautiful Bettas to schooling nano fish and African cichlids, the variety is vast. They also carry a great selection of live plants to help you achieve that perfect "aquascaped" look. Expert Staff & Service The biggest draw of the Cary location is the knowledgeable staff. Unlike the big-box pet stores, the team here consists of actual hobbyists who understand water chemistry, compatibility, and equipment. They are always willing to take the time to answer questions—whether you're troubleshooting an algae bloom or planning your first 75-gallon setup. A True One-Stop Shop The Fish Room is meticulously organized and carries everything you need to keep your tank thriving: High-End Gear: They stock reputable brands for lighting, filtration, and hardscaping. Specialty Supplies: From high-quality frozen foods to specific water conditioners and testing kits, you don't have to wait for an online order to get what you need. The Verdict The store is clean, the displays are inspiring, and the health of the livestock is clearly a priority. It’s the kind of local business that makes the hobby more enjoyable and successful for everyone involved. If you haven't been yet, it's well worth the visit to Kildaire Farm Road.”
