Aquarium & Imports Inc. in Arden, North Carolina is a polarizing establishment that draws strong opinions from the Asheville-area community. Primarily known as a multi-animal pet store stocking birds, reptiles, small mammals, and fish, the shop also carries aquarium equipment and supplies that appeal to hobbyists exploring both freshwater and saltwater setups.
On the aquatic side, the store has earned praise for its fish selection and tank cleanliness. Customers interested in reef tanks have noted energetic marine fish, live rock availability, and equipment worth browsing. The koi selection stands out as a particular draw — one customer called it the best they found in the area, with a wide range of sizes and colors.
Multiple visitors report the staff being willing to answer questions at length, offering tips and advice on aquatic animal care without making customers feel like a burden. Long-time customers — some visiting for over a decade — speak highly of the store's knowledge when it comes to animal health, noting that staff have helped nurse sick animals back to health. The prices are frequently described as reasonable, and several reviewers emphasize that the team genuinely cares about the animals they sell.
However, Aquarium & Imports draws significant criticism regarding the conditions in which some animals — particularly reptiles and birds — are kept. Multiple reviewers have raised concerns about enclosure sizes, temperature regulation, humidity levels, and general cleanliness in non-aquatic sections of the store. One customer reported losing a bearded dragon shortly after purchase, with a veterinarian confirming the animal had been ill prior to sale.
These complaints paint a complicated picture that prospective customers should weigh carefully. The fish department appears to be the store's strongest offering, with clean tanks and healthy stock earning consistent praise. For Asheville-area aquarists searching for koi, marine fish, or live rock, Aquarium & Imports is worth a visit — but those shopping for reptiles or birds may want to inspect animals carefully before purchasing.

I’ve been going to WNC Aquarium for about 12 years, and I can confidently say they take exceptional care of every animal. The facility is always clean and well maintained, the animals are healthy and very docile, and their prices are amazing. They don’t just sell animals—they genuinely love and care for them. If you ever have a sick reptile, snake, or any other animal, take them to WNC. They truly know what they’re doing and follow the proper procedures to help animals recover. They have saved so many of my snakes that I’ve honestly lost count. Absolutely amazing people and service. Stop supporting pet stores that overstock and mistreat animals—go to WNC, where you know the animals are loved and properly cared for.

This place is very dirty. Some supplies are outdated. I fear of the health of the birds.

I've been going frequently for the better part of a month now and both of the guys there are always friendly, knowledgeable, and always willing to give tips and advice. I've purchased an assortment of aquatic animals from here now and they are all healthy and thriving. You can tell they really care about each individual animal in the store. Wish I could give 10 stars

Animals kept in despicable conditions. Reptiles in enclosures so small the animal cant move at all. Lack of appropriate heat, temperate gradients, humidity, proper substrates or hides to minimize stress induced health conditions. Multiple broken up sheds in enclosures point to a lack of cleaning and improper humidity to allow for proper shedding. Birds kept in extremely dark, cramped dusty conditions likely to induce respitory problems. Incorrect size and types of perches for the birds to rest on will lead to malformation in their feet and incorrect bar spacing in the cages will lead to further injuries. Small mammals kept in extremely small cramped spaces where they are fighting each other likely due to lack of resources and no ability to hide. When the employee was asked about the state of a savannah monitor kept in an entirely inappropriate enclosure he seemed to have no knowledge of the importance of gradient temperature zones or stable humidity. There was an Iguana kept in an enclosure it couldnt move in with no heat sources and no humidity gauges. Several fish with indications of ich. The dingy appearsnce is not the problem here - the total lack of proper husbandry, care, and providing what is needed for these animals to be in healthy conditions in every aspect is what is.

The animals in this store's care do not receive vet care and have wounds. They are not given proper food, clean cages or clean water. Many of the pets look ill.

After gaining interest in starting a reef tank and searching for stores locally, Aquarium & Imports Inc. caught my eye on google, and after seeing the Google reviews I had to go see for myself. Upon entering I spent alot of time looking in the fish tanks, a little bit looking at the equipment, and about a minute at the reptiles. Thinking back to any negative reviews I read, all I could think is this looks exactly like any non box store, pet store I have ever gone to growing up in the Midwest, if anything its bigger and better than most I have ever been to. Every inhabited fish tank appeared to be very clean and the fish were energetic. I am bad with names and I don't like to take up much of people's time, but when speaking with the younger guy working that day he answered any question I had and didn't seem like he was being hassled by any questions. Which seems to happen more often than not most places we go these days. I look forward to going back for some marine fish, live rock, and supplies as needed.

Would leave 0 stars if I could. A absolutely cruel, inhumane place for animals. The animals are abused, often wild caught, and kept in tiny pet carriers or less than 5 gallon glass enclosures.
