Claremont Pet & Aquarium Center has quietly become a destination aquarium shop in New Hampshire's Upper Valley, drawing hobbyists who willingly drive an hour or more to visit. The reason, in large part, is Josh — the store's resident aquatics expert whose passion is immediately evident in the crystal-clear tanks and vibrant, healthy fish lining the walls. Multiple reviewers describe his ability to listen to a customer's vision and then walk them through stocking options, coral selections, and planted tank setups with patience and genuine enthusiasm.
The freshwater section is the star, with an especially strong lineup of smaller species like tetras alongside bettas, shrimp, snails, and live plants. The saltwater wall in the back holds corals and clownfish, and Josh is happy to talk reef-building ideas with anyone who asks. Driftwood, rocks, and aquascaping hardscape round out the aquatic inventory, and the store stocks full tank setup packages for newcomers ready to dive in.
One family walked out with a complete planted betta tank — shrimp, snails, live plants, and all the hardware — after a single visit with Josh's guidance. Beyond fish, the Claremont location doubles as a full pet store with reptiles, birds, small mammals, and enough variety that families treat it like a mini zoo. Dog grooming is available on-site, and the checkout counter features fun trinkets that catch eyes on the way out.
A few caveats worth noting: prices run noticeably higher than big-box competitors and online retailers, and some customers have flagged a surcharge on card payments. The return policy is also strict. But for those who value livestock quality, tank cleanliness, and the kind of one-on-one guidance that turns a casual interest into a lasting hobby, the premium can feel justified.
The aquarium section alone — immaculate, beautifully stocked, and clearly curated by someone who cares — makes it worth the trip to Claremont.

All around fantastic store. I stopped in out of curiosity as I pass this store often for work. I immediately noticed an impressive aquatic section. Loads of freshwater fish and a good selection of saltwater on the back wall. I had a question about clown fish which grew into an excellent conversation with Josh. His passion was clear and his energy was contagious! He was curios about what my vision was for the tank and walked me around the coral tank to give me some ideas. Overall it is an excellent store and worth a drive to check out! Thank you Josh!

Had a great time selecting some fish and plants with Josh. Super chill and knowledgeable. The aquarium section is amazing, probably the cleanest I have ever seen. Huge selection of healthy, vibrant fish focusing on species that are hardy, active and beautiful. Especially great selection of smaller species like tetras. The is my new go to spot.

I haven't had any type of aquarium since I was young but my kiddo loves fish and was asking for one. I was blown away by the store and the selection of everything in the aquarium section especially! Josh was fantastic and took the time to get us all outfitted with a pretty incredible set up- including a betta, shrimp, snails, and live plants. It's a pretty awesome looking tank- not like that cheesy looking ones I had as a kid. Josh was knowledgeable, kind, patient, very obviously passionate about this hobby, and definitely enabling my new fishy addiction (in a good way!). Thank you!

Highly recommend this pet store. I have gotten all kinds of animals from them and they are all beautiful and healthy. I love the communication they have with customers. Especially if u are a breeder they have a beautiful Selection. I won’t get fish from any other place. They are worth the extra money.
