About
Fish Freaks has become something of an institution among Omaha aquarists, and one walk through the door explains the nearly thousand reviews. The space is deceptively large — much bigger inside than the storefront suggests — with the front given over to dry goods and the back filled row after row with spotless, well-labeled tanks. Visitors keep noting the same first impression: it smells clean, the plants are lush with no algae in sight, and the fish look genuinely healthy.
One traveler passing through Nebraska said it would be her go-to LFS if she lived nearby. The livestock care is the heart of the place. Bettas live in full planted tanks with their own bubblers rather than cups, and staff quarantine sick fish and label them not-for-sale so you only take home healthy animals.
Before certain purchases they will ask for a photo of your setup and a water sample, and the free water test alone is worth the trip. You will find an enormous range of freshwater and saltwater fish, corals, aquatic plants, snails, and livebearers like swordtails for sale in Omaha, NE, plus rare species you won't easily find elsewhere in the region. As an aquarium store it is just as strong on gear: tanks of every kind from bare setups to stands to saltwater-ready rigs with hang-on-back filters, sumps and baffle builds, and brands like Fluval, Aquarium Co-Op, and Python.
Staff names come up constantly in reviews — Eric geeking out over aquatic plants, Kayden breaking down a sump build, Mike and his son running a friendly, busy shop. They also handle in-home tank maintenance for hobbyists heading out of town, vacation care included. If you are searching for a knowledgeable local fish store near me in the Omaha area, Fish Freaks is the spot regulars keep coming back to, even when a big-box store sits closer to home.

— Jeanie Harrell5.0Edited a week ago“Stopped in quick while passing through Nebraska. Absolutely blown away. You walk in and the first thing you notice is the smell, it smells CLEAN! The front is all dry product, the back is fish and plants. The plants were so beautiful and healthy and I didn't notice any algae anywhere! The fish... they were healthy with clean tanks & legible labels! Their prices were VERY reasonable! I was immediately greeted, asked if I needed help by multiple employees and ended up geeking out about aquatic plants with Eric! He was super helpful finding me a couple cultures I could safely take with me on the rest of my week-long road trip. They even stayed open late for me - if I lived in the area this would definitely be my go-to LFS!”

— Dustin McClary5.0a month ago“I visited Fish Freaks, I was excited to view their selection of supplies and animals and speak with a knowledgeable hobbyists. Ive been following them online for years and finally made it into the store to buy supplies for my tank. Given their expertise, I expected personalized advice on how to add a couple aquatic plants to my Axolotl tank. I took my time browsing the entire store, I was never approached or offered assistance, thats okay but when I was done browsing and ready to make a purchase, I asked an employee for help with the freshwater plants, their attitude towards me was dismissive and cold the entire time, leaving me waiting for several minutes before attending to me. I understand having to finish tasks but they didnt give me a time frame when theyd be done, just ignored me until I was ready to walk out the store, he then let me know hed be with me soon. They ultimately suggested I research online (Something I had been doing for months) and order plants online which I found unhelpful and a bit rude when I came here specifically for advice and to support a local business. Another employee (who seemed a lot more enthusiastic and helpful) overheard our conversation and recommended a plant (the one I planned on buying based on my research) I wasnt trying to test the employees, I genuinely was hoping id get some thoughful insight. Although I ended up making the purchase, I left feeling unwelcome and regretted spending my money here.”
