About

Tucked into North Kansas City, Kansas City Pond & Water Gardening is the kind of specialty shop that thrives on deep expertise in one thing: ponds. From the street, it looks modest — reviewers consistently describe it as a "small store" — but step inside and head to the outdoor area in the back, and you'll find a sprawling selection of pond fish, hardy water plants, and an impressive above-ground display pond stocked with absolutely massive, colorful koi that give you a preview of what your own fish could become with proper care. The staff here is the real draw.

Multiple customers describe hour-long phone consultations where team members walk them through everything from winterizing koi to managing pond liner repairs. One first-time koi owner recounted how the shop guided them through setting up a 470-gallon indoor tank to overwinter their fish, helping them separate and clean hardy lily rhizomes — the kind of hands-on, practical advice that's nearly impossible to find elsewhere. For new pond owners in the Kansas City area who just inherited a backyard water feature and don't know where to start, this shop functions almost like a lifeline.

The fish selection focuses squarely on pond species — large koi in a variety of colors and fancy goldfish that customers rave about. Water plants are a strong suit too, from lilies to other aquatic varieties suited for water gardens. On the hardware side, they carry heaters, fountains, pond liners, and the full range of accessories needed to build and maintain a healthy aquatic ecosystem.

A couple of reviews note some frustrations — one customer had a plant order sold to someone else without notification, and accessibility for wheelchair users is a genuine concern, as the outdoor fish area isn't fully accessible. But the overwhelming consensus across more than a hundred reviews is that this shop delivers expert-level pond knowledge with genuine warmth. If you're building, repairing, or stocking a koi pond or water garden anywhere near Kansas City, this is where the serious pond people go.

  • “Store personnel was very knowledgeable. They have everything you need for your pond”

  • “These people are amazing! As a first time pond owner(came with the new house) and a first time koi owner ( my mom convinced me the pond needed them, ya know for the kids) I really found myself struggling when I researched and realized they would not survive in that shallow of water during winter. Now I have a 470 gallon tarp tank in my basement and probably 75lbs of Hardy Lily rizomes cleaned up and separated. I wouldn't have been able to get all that done without all the information I was able to gather from the experts at this store. 1 in person visit and several phone calls one of which was more then an hour long I am comfortable and confident in my ability to keep my Koi happy and healthy for many years especially knowing they are just a phone call away!!”

  • “I ordered a few water plants. They said they would be in later in the week and would call us. We heard nothing. We called them after about a week and a half and they said they don't have time to call customers when small orders come in and that the plants had been sold to someone else!”

  • “This is a nice little shop with a good selection of pond plants, accessories for taking care of ponds and water gardens, and fish. They have an above ground pond with absolutely huge koi in it. They also have a variety of fish for sale. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the plants and fish they sell. We have purchased multiple plants and a couple of fish over the three years we have been shopping there, and they have all done extremely well so far.”

  • “KC Pond & Water Garden has everything you need for a healthy aquatic ecosystem, with or without fish. The staff was very friendly and very helpful! The location is easy to get to and while the store itself is smaller, they have space in the back with all their plants and fish. The fish seem to be of high quality and doing great! I am excited to go back for more!”
