About
Scales Tails - Aquatics Emporium & Pet Store LLC is a family-run shop in Joplin, Missouri that divides opinion sharply among visitors. The store stocks a broad mix of freshwater fish, reptiles, birds, and feeder animals, along with terrarium supplies and aquatic accessories. Staff member Tammy and the other owners have earned praise from loyal regulars for their willingness to spend time answering questions about reptile and fish care, sometimes holding up the checkout line to make sure customers leave fully prepared.
On the aquatics side, reviewers report finding healthy goldfish, colorful bettas, live plants that thrive months after purchase, and a decent selection of freshwater species. Feeder crickets and worms are highlighted as some of the most affordable in the Joplin area, drawing a steady stream of snake and reptile owners. The store also carries food, décor, and basic supplies, though some visitors have noted the accessories selection can be thin, particularly for bird owners.
However, transparency demands acknowledging the store's most persistent criticism: cleanliness. A significant number of reviewers describe a strong ammonia smell upon entering, algae-covered tanks, and cramped enclosures for some animals. The store reportedly prohibits photos and videos inside, which has drawn additional scrutiny.
Some visitors describe well-maintained animals and a tidy shop; others paint a starkly different picture. The experience appears to vary considerably depending on when you visit. For Joplin residents seeking a locally owned alternative to big-box pet stores, Scales Tails offers competitive pricing on feeders and live animals, plus genuinely personalized service from staff who clearly have deep knowledge of the species they sell.
The owners treat customers like family, according to multiple reviews, and Bobby Bawl has been called out by name for great service. If you're shopping for freshwater fish or reptile supplies in the Joplin area, it may be worth a visit to judge the conditions for yourself.

Customer reviews
“This place is terrible, the first thing when you walk in is the smell, it was so bad we were covering our noses the entire time, the fish and other animals where poorly treated, and some of the fish were dead. I DO NOT RECOMMEND COMING TO THIS PLACE.”

— Aden McReynolds5.0a month ago“This is the best pet store in Joplin, especially if you appreciate fish, birds and reptiles They always have what I need. If I have a question or need advice regarding my reptiles, Tammy is very knowledgeable and so willing to help. I really appreciate this place and certainly recommend it.”
— Cynthia Harrington5.0a month ago“This place made me throw up in my mouth. Read that again. Literal vomit in my mouth. I tried to walk out in and I literally bounced off the stench. Tried again and made it 4 steps before I couldn’t breathe and started gagging so hard I threw up in my mouth. I have never smelled anything like that in my life. I am not exaggerating about this at all. Had two people with me that had similar reactions. This person should not be running a business. They need to be investigated. These animals are being kept in deplorable conditions. I can’t state anything about the fish as I didn’t make it far enough in. Avoid this place at all costs.”
— Tim Piland1.0a month ago“Walked in and then right back out. Smelled so bad of ammonia.”
— Ryan Crandall1.0a month ago“Walked through the door. The first thing that hits you in the face is the heater. The second: old overpowering urine that you breathe and throw up on your mouth. It was an awful ammonia induced breathing hazard and a threat to animal and human health.”
— Derek Norman1.0a month ago“Super friendly. Lots of animals. Prices are reasonable and much better then a National Pet Store.”
— Florence Cervantes-Gonzalez5.02 months ago“This place is filthy. Theres even a sign saying no pics or videos so people cant prove how bad it is. It smelled. A lady was cleaning rabbit cage and just left the door open. Fish tanks were green with algae.... no. Bad reviews are correct. Nasty.”
— Emily Hatfield1.02 months ago“They are very helpful and friendly and have a nice little shop.”
— Brandy Kirch5.02 months ago“Prices are a bit high but the place was clean”
