Walking into Exotic Aquarium in Sacramento, the first thing you'll notice is the koi pond greeting you near the entrance — a fitting introduction to a store that sprawls across rows upon rows of tanks stocked with an impressive variety of freshwater and saltwater fish. This is a big shop with big inventory, and regulars stop by every couple of weeks just to see what the latest shipment brought in. The freshwater selection is where Exotic Aquarium really flexes.
Goldfish enthusiasts will find one of the stronger selections in the Sacramento area, especially right after fresh shipments land. The variety extends from everyday community fish to more unusual species — rice fish with striking blue eyes, red pencil fish, hi-fin sharks, various gouramis, and angelfish. They stock shrimp and snails for nano setups, and their saltwater section features clean, well-maintained tanks with notable displays.
An arowana on-site has drawn attention (and some controversy), underscoring the store's willingness to deal in larger exotic species. Pricing is a genuine draw. 99 depending on species.
99 and competitive pricing on staples make this a smart choice for anyone stocking a new tank or building out a breeding project. The supply side covers rocks, driftwood, lighting, and general aquarium equipment at reasonable prices. Staff knowledge runs deep — multiple reviewers describe lengthy, genuinely helpful conversations about fish health, pond fungus treatment, and species care.
The store operates on a system where you check in at the front desk for assistance, which keeps things organized but can feel slow during busy periods. Some customers have reported difficulty getting timely help, so patience during peak hours is worth planning for. One caveat: there's no live fish guarantee, and a handful of buyers have reported receiving fish that developed illness shortly after purchase.
Quarantining new arrivals is strongly advisable. The store also carries reptiles and reptile supplies, adding another dimension to an already sprawling operation that Sacramento fish keepers clearly consider essential.

Over the past year or two my wife and I have bought many, many fish from this location. Ranging from minnows, Koi, a ton of goldfish, Hi Fin Sharks, Shrimp, ect. We now stop by about once every two weeks just to see what comes in. We have three above ground ponds in the backyard, 500, 280, and 200 gallons approx. Plus an inside little eco thingy for the shrimp and snail. The staff at Exotic are always super helpful! Sometimes I'll be picking out a fish and get in that panicky can't make a decision mode, and they never rush me and reassure me that it's totally fine. Also, always willing to help when I have questions. At one point I had a fungus (didn't know what it was) growing on fish in one of my ponds and lost a fish, so I asked them for help. The owners son (I gotta ask his name oops) asked for pictures and after looking made a suggestion and didn't push their products knowing that they ran out of what I needed. He referred me to another way of buying. He was right, and my fish healed after treatment. It was ultimate customer service. They were busy and stressed, but he still took the time to help me. I read through some other reviews and saw some complaints and can address one: They have signs up, if you need help, go to the front desk and they coordinate for someone to help you. Don't just stop staff who are always on an assignment unless they ask if you need help. It's an organized way of doing it that seems to work good. We love the fish selection here and are always excited to see what comes in. Prices wise, it really just depends on what it is. Sometimes I'll see things that are cheaper than other places, and sometimes I'll see things that are more expensive. I think that's just the business based off the supplier and shipping. I know they don't have a fish guarantee, but I get it. Fish die from transfer stress, pond/aquarium quality, ect. So much of that depends on the customers care not theirs, so I agree it would be a losing money for them thing to have that kind of guarantee. We really do love this spot and appreciate the help they always give us. Plus, the selection of Goldfish is great, especially when they get the fresh shipments in.

Do NOT support this business. They have the money to run a business but keep beautiful creatures in tanks that are not adequate for them and their health. It’s disheartening to see a tiktok posted by the company showing how they allowed a Arowana grow large in a 55 gal tank but still hasn’t tried relocating it or finding an adequate living space. The company claims it was a surrender but hasn’t done anything to help the fish. Please do not take something you can’t take care of. The fish is stressed, can’t move around, will develop droopy eye from being cramped, immune system weakens, and so much more. Do not run a business if you can’t properly take care of the species. Droopy eye in arowanas is primarily caused by environmental factors like constant downward gazing at food, genetics, a fatty diet leading to fat deposits, and head trauma from impact. A one-directional water flow and a cramped tank can also stress the fish, contributing to the condition. This should not be a business, owner doesn’t know anything about exotic species.
