Walking into New Wave Aquaria in Plymouth, Minnesota, you immediately understand why saltwater hobbyists across the Twin Cities consider it their home base. The store is built around reef keeping with an intensity and focus that's hard to find anywhere in the region. Rows of pristine frag tanks display corals spanning every price point — from $20 OG Green Stylos to $1,000 Ultra Acanthophyllia — alongside xenia, zoanthids, green polyps, and more.
The livestock selection extends to an impressive range of saltwater fish, including exotic clownfish varieties and what reviewers call the largest selection of tangs they've seen, plus a solid inventory of invertebrates. The retail floor stocks serious equipment from brands like EcoTech, Tunze, and Apex, along with Waterbox aquariums, protein skimmers, RODI units, and dry rock. Multiple customers note that the supply selection is thorough enough to avoid ordering online for most needs, which says a lot for a specialty saltwater shop.
New Wave also runs an online store and ships corals and fish — reviewers who've ordered frags online report receiving notably generous, healthy pieces that outsize what other vendors send. Staff members Dean, Dan, and owner Jen come up repeatedly in reviews for their depth of knowledge. One customer brought in a clownfish with what appeared to be ich, and a staff member correctly diagnosed constipation, saving them unnecessary medication costs.
Another customer praised Jen for personally helping coordinate an EcoTech light warranty return. That level of hands-on involvement in customers' tanks — including maintenance services — sets the store apart. The physical space itself draws compliments: clean, well-organized display tanks with visibly healthy animals, a comfortable atmosphere that invites browsing.
Prices run slightly above average, but the consensus is that livestock quality and care justify it. For reef keepers in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro, New Wave Aquaria delivers a shopping experience that most markets simply don't have.

Awesome fish store with affordable fish. The staff is very knowledgeable, I usually work with Jenn, Dean or Dan and they go out their way to help out. Especially with selecting my Exotic Clown Fish. Stop by and you won’t regret it.

Jen at New Wave Aquaria is a terrible business owner. Go anywhere else!! I bought a fish, they said they would call when it comes in, they never did, I had to call and go in store when they said oh we’ve had it for weeks!?! The fish that was given to me (first time fish buyer) already sick but I didn’t know. My plan: get it quickly and safely in my aquarium while following all steps. Fish died a few hours later. I brought the fish and tank water for testing the next day. Jen was mad at me, very short and snappy caring way more about her feelings about the situation and didn’t care at all about mine. After not hearing anything for weeks I called and she was arguing and making accusations. I did a ton of research and spoke to experts and I know I didn’t do anything wrong. I disputed the charge on my CC and I received a nice accusation of fraud and theft and they plan to litigate.

Without a doubt one of the nicest, friendliest, and knowledgeable shops out there. Tanks, frags, and fish were all impeccable. I was visiting from out of town and was blown away. Thank you for all that you do, you’re a model for what’s possible.

This is the nicest saltwater store in the twin cities. I’m very fortunate to have this store to go to. Most states don’t have a store this nice. Great selection of corals, tons of products to look at, they have most of everything you’ll need so you won’t have to order online for supplies. The frag tanks and everything always looks very kept up including everything else, corals and fish always look very healthy. The staff and owners are extremely nice. If you see Dean in there he’s is a great employee to work with.

Beautiful store and very knowledgeable, down to earth staff/management. My son had a summer class where he received a clownfish, coral, and learned the basics of salt water tanks. About a month in, we were having issues with stringy poop (thinking parasite) and the start of what looked like ich near his mouth. We stopped in thinking about medicating, but after chatting with the staff he recommended different food and some vitamins. Turns out our poor fish was super constipated and doing some inexpensive changes solved the issues. Staff member was also open about the fact the fish might die if it was ich/parasites and set realistic expectations. Will return again!
