About
9-star reputation — as the freshwater fish store that lives up to its name. The shrimp selection is the headline: tank after tank of healthy, vividly colored Neocaridina and Caridina, from red rili and black rili to golden back and Pure Red Line. Hobbyists keep coming back because the livestock arrives home active and thriving, with one recent shopper happily reporting that their golden back shrimp are already pregnant.
If you're hunting cherry shrimp for sale in Plymouth, MN, this is the spot locals tend to name first. But shrimp aren't the whole story. The store stocks live aquarium plants and tissue cultures — Rotala among them — plus a deep run of driftwood, spider wood, and hardscape for aquascaping, and there's even a little practice area where you can plan a layout before you commit.
Bettas line one wall on a drip system, small schooling fish like Pygmy Corys and kuhli loaches fill the back room, and you'll find platys, Nerite and mystery snails, and even a couple of axolotls available in Plymouth, MN. Aquariums, terrariums, foods, and shrimp-specific supplies round out the shelves, and every tank runs a sponge filter that speaks to the care behind the operation. What sets the shop apart is the personality.
Owner Joe greets regulars with a deadpan "Welcome to Walmart," and staffer Danny — singled out again and again by reviewers as "the goat" — answers beginner shrimp-keeping questions without a trace of condescension or hovering. There's a couch for family to wait on, Pokémon and TCG cards by the register, and full-size Star Wars replicas (Chewbacca, Darth Vader, and R2-D2) that delight kids. Visitors note the shop is growing, with more in the works.
For Twin Cities aquarists who'd rather pick out their own shrimp in person, Joe's Shrimp Shack is worth the drive.

— Wyatt Peterson5.02 weeks ago“Came here for pokemon cards. The owner was very nice to my 7-year-old and i. He Showed us how to price our cards properly even when as far as showing us how to properly price raw cards per condition and how to look them up what apps to install on my phone the whole 9 yards. He noticed my son's binder had a bunch of pokémon sleeves and no penny sleeves so he gave him a free thing of 100 penny sleeves. A few of my son's cards had no penny sleeves or top loaders and when my son was showing him his collection he was giving him Penny sleeves and top loaders for my son's raw cards on top of giving him those pack of penny sleeves for free. . I know the penny sleeves pack are only a dollar for a hundred but it still goes a long way when you do something nice like that.. Great place!! Great people!”

— Josh Richardson5.0Edited a month ago“This place is awesome!! They have a huge variety of shrimp, snails, fish , and even a couple of axolotl!! They have an extremely rare endangered species that you're not going to see anywhere else!! Also it is the PREMIER spot for Pokemon swag, from cards to poke balls, extremely rare cards and everything is reasonably priced. The clerk was very helpful and informative without hovering over your shoulder (which was greatly appreciated) you can also get any size or variety of aquariums/terrariums. Which live plants and driftwood to decorate. Also you can't pass this place up if you are a Star wars fan! They have full size replicas of Chewbacca the wookiee (8ft tall), Darth Vader, and even r2d2. I purchased 3 platys, 3 red rili shrimp, 3 black rili shrimp, and 2 kuhli loaches (my favorites) and a variety of live plants. Once my tank becomes more established I will be back for snails and much more. Highly recommend.”
— David Rife5.0a month ago“It was great! The staff was really helpful! And who was expecting a Pokémon card shop? Definitely not me! You can also get aquarium plants and lots of specialized shrimp products. So many cool shrimps!”
— Justin Gagnon5.0a month ago“Visited recently because I am starting to build a planted tank with the intention of eventually keeping cherry shrimp, ottos, and maybe a mystery snail or two. The store has a great selection of hardscape and plants that are shrimp-centric, as well as all the aquarium supplies you could need to build or maintain a setup. They even have a little practice area set up so you can plan out your tank. Lots of cool colored Neocaridina and Caradina shrimp for sale. Shrimp seemed healthy and active. They also have a variety of fish for sale in the back room. Danny was working and was knowledgeable and friendly, answered all my questions I had about the hobby. I ended up just getting some hardscape but once I get my tank set up I’ll be back for plants and then eventually shrimp”
— Nicholas Herman5.0a month ago“Very helpful and knowledgeable employees, many types of fish, shrimp, and plants.”
