About
Duncan's Pet Shop is a beloved local fish store in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where the aquatics section earns consistent praise for clean, well-kept tanks and healthy freshwater fish. While Duncan's carries more than fish, its aquarium aisle is a genuine destination for hobbyists across North Idaho, and the shop backs every livestock purchase with a 48-hour warranty, replacing any fish that doesn't settle in once it gets home. If you're searching for betta fish for sale near me, Duncan's keeps a rotating selection of healthy bettas alongside the community-tank staples that pair well with them.
Tetras, including ember tetras, plus plecos and freshwater frogs are regularly available in Coeur d'Alene, making it easy to stock a community or planted aquarium in a single trip. For aquascapers, the store also carries live aquarium plants, so you can build a heavily planted tank with the fish and greenery sourced together. What really sets Duncan's apart is the guidance.
Staff like Chris are known for specific, honest stocking advice; one shopper picked up ember tetras and a Chinese pleco for a planted 20-gallon betta community tank and left with a clear plan rather than a guess. That kind of free, in-store consultation is a big reason locals say their Duncan's fish outlast anything bought at big-box chains, in some cases thriving for years rather than months. The shop also offers fish boarding, so your aquarium's inhabitants are looked after while you travel.
Family-owned and deeply rooted in the community, Duncan's is the go-to alternative to corporate pet stores for anyone looking for a freshwater fish store in Coeur d'Alene, ID. It's friendly, genuinely knowledgeable, and stocked with bettas, tetras, plecos, frogs, and live plants that arrive home healthy and stay that way.

“Our family is a brand new frog-fam thanks to the knowledgeable and supportive help from Evett at Duncan’s Pet Shop. She walked us through necessities and crucial care points to help us succeed in keeping our new pal “Jumpy” the PacMan frog healthy & happy. Thank you for your help Evett, and to Duncan’s for having all the products we needed to get going! We’ll be back soon for more crickets & possibly more critters!”

— Kylee5.02 months ago“Went to buy a scorpion unfortunately they already sold him so I asked if they could order another of that same breed and they said “you’ll just get what we order there’s no choosing””
— Colyn Fleming1.03 months ago“Edit in response to owner: there seems to be some miscommunication between your staff because the old man who acts like the owner (idk if he is) was quite happy to show off a rat he kept in the back room and claimed to use him for breeding. Ammonia is caused by rat urine and builds up too quickly for aquariums to be acceptable for any significant length of time. I am glad you agree ammonia is harmful, and would love to see your rats kept in more appropriate enclosures. I am only telling what I have seen when visiting this shop. I have no ill will and would love to come back if the animal welfare is improved. Treats their animals very badly. Read below for some examples: Pet rats kept 20 to a 20 gallon bin with one hide and nothing else mixed sex so the females will be pregnant (rats reproduce extremely rapidly) Owner advocates for picking up rats by their tails which is dangerous and can seriously injure their spines Kept a male rat ALONE for his whole life (rats are super super social animals) in a ten gallon aquarium (aquariums trap ammonia so are very dangerous for rats, even though acceptable for mice and other such critters) with nothing but a plastic hide Birds are multiple to a cage all in one room along with the rats and all other live animals. Shared airspace is how most diseases from this guys get passed on Many birds self-mutilating from stress On top of that the prices are ridiculous I am all for supporting local stores but this guy displays and advocates animal cruelty. Honestly even chain stores like Petco and Petsmart are better.”
