About
Panhandle Exotics in Pensacola, FL is first and foremost an exotic-animal store and mini zoo rather than a dedicated aquarium shop, but it stays a useful stop for Gulf Coast freshwater hobbyists picking up the basics. The tiki-themed retail floor is packed with skunks, sugar gliders, chinchillas, hedgehogs, rats, mini pigs, turtles, iguanas, and snakes, while a separate walk-through zoo houses a sloth, lemurs, an otter, foxes, and even a baby alligator that families drive hours to see. On the aquatic side, reviewers single out the betta display, kept in proper tanks with peaceful tankmates rather than the usual plastic cups, and the shop is a dependable place to find bettas for sale in Pensacola, FL alongside feeder fish, axolotls, hermit crabs, and a wall of reptile and aquarium dry goods.
One regular came in for an axolotl and walked out with a lionhead rabbit, which says plenty about the variety on the floor. If you keep reptiles or amphibians, locals — including a Pensacola snake-rescue volunteer named Jennifer — treat this as their go-to supply shop. The team earns steady praise for being knowledgeable and patient.
Owners Chris and Derek and the rest of the staff walk first-timers through care for everything from rats to sugar gliders, and the store famously asks visitors to wash their hands before handling any animal, a biosecurity habit long-time customers respect. Keep an eye out for Mr. Nibbles, the resident Patagonian cavy, wandering the aisles.
Newer visitors should know the shop now charges a small admission fee (around $5) that is credited toward purchases, introduced to keep browse-only traffic from crowding the compact space. Some reviewers wish a few enclosures were larger and reactions to the paid zoo are mixed, but most leave having learned something new. For a genuinely one-of-a-kind fish store and exotic-pet outing in the Florida Panhandle, Panhandle Exotics is hard to beat.

“I want to start this off by saying this is my experience and opinion. I’m entitled to it and it’s not up for argument. I have two skunks I bought from this store. I will say that both were happy and healthy. Although I personally don’t feed them what the store does, they weren’t harmed in any way with their diet. I just prefer to feed them something different. I did not come to the store for the first pet because I had him delivered to me. The second one I got I actually came to the store for. The store is an older place but it was very clean, the animals were clean and having many animals myself, I had no concern with the care of them. Animals poop A LOT! And the fact that the pets areas were clean and tidy was impressive. The only thing I would slightly feel was negative (and it’s not a huge problem) was I had to wait for a while for service. But in all fairness, they were busy, it had just opened, they were dealing with a lot of customers walking in and out. I can under understand why they charge a fee to get in but before people get upset about a five dollar fee it goes towards what you purchase in the store or towards the care of the animals so I think that is not a big issue. Honestly, overall on a rating from 1 to 10, I would give them a nine only because I had to wait quite a while ( I was a little cranky because I had just throw six hours to get there!) I will definitely go back if I want to get any other exotic animals”

I looked through other reviews and even the comments on their “viral” TikTok acount, and noticed that many people had the same issue as me. First of all, you’re charged to even ENTER the store. I wasn’t going to continue until the person behind the counter explained that you could interact with most of the animals. She said that “a few” enclosures were hands off which I completely understood, until I paid the fee and about 80% of the store was hands off. Every animal you could interact with was about the same as your average pet store, however the animals and products were extremely overpriced. I said to the person that I was with that the hamsters alone were 40$ and he agreed saying even petsmart was cheaper. We laughed it off and continued looking around until the owner came up to us very condescendingly, saying “yeah and the hamsters at petsmart are mass produced.” We ignored his rudeness and kept walking around, then he came back looking for us and shoved money into our hands telling us “this is for you to go to petsmart” then pointed to the door and told us to get out. He was extremely rude and we never involved him in our conversation to begin with. We refused since we didn’t have all our money back and we were still looking around, then he said he was going to call animal control services and walked away. We rolled out eyes then went to check out with our one item. He refused to sell to us and kept telling us to get out, saying “you kind of people always have something to say”, and even followed us outside and took a picture of our license plate. We laughed since we did absolutely nothing wrong. Overall the owner was super disrespectful and rude, and that’s not even mentioning the abusive living conditions of the animals, such as the dead rotting fish floating around in the tanks, or the small enclosures these poor animals were in, knee deep in their own feces. You shouldn’t own a store if you can’t listen to people say what they think about it. Will never be going here again and I encourage anyone who sees this to stay far from this store. Absolutely disgusting.”
— Caitlyn Joan1.04 days ago“We came in. The main store area is free to see: bunnies, pigs - kunekune, fox babies, hedgehog, tortoises, snakes, hairless guinea pigs, skunks, and more. The small "zoo" has baby alligator, 2 lemurs, sloth, 2 pretty fox, boa, otter, ect. I enjoyed it for I think $7 - 8 per person.”

— Chris Bruce2.06 days ago“What a fun experience - adults and kids. The team members could not have been more friendly or knowledgeable of the animals. All animals looked so well cared for and we all learned something and saw animals we never knew existed. There is a fee but it’s worth it and can understand why. Thank you! We will be back!”

— Cook Creck2.0a week ago“I have visited this store many times before and had a great experience however today not so much. As a exotic pet owner myself the thought of paying 5$ just to shop there or even get in is a big turn off to me. We drove a hour to come and shop here just to leave without shopping at all wish they would figure something out but for now probably won't be back.”
— Josh Pedersen2.0a week ago“Visited today with family. All animals seemed healthy & happy & clean. Went in for an axolotyl and left with a lionhead rabbit! Birthday girl changed her mind. Staff was very friendly & helpful! Zoo was a fun addition as well. Highly recommend whether you are shopping for a new pet or just want to look around.”
— Laurie Pritchett5.0a week ago“Panhandle Exotics is by far the best exotic pet store in all of Florida. When we were searching for our newest pets, we looked everywhere—traveling as far south as Key West and as far north as Pensacola. Unfortunately, we were scammed multiple times and had nearly given up hope. Then we came across Panhandle Exotics on TikTok. After watching several of their videos and exploring their YouTube channel, we decided to give them a try. This was back in June 2025. We were definitely skeptical at first, especially since the store is about 6.5 hours from our home in the Tampa Bay area. My wife called and spoke with one of their employees, who was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. They guided us through the process of obtaining the proper documentation, which typically takes 30–60 days—but with their support, we completed everything in just about a week. We made the long drive with cautious optimism, and we were absolutely blown away. The staff was professional, friendly, and highly knowledgeable. They made sure we had everything we needed before we left to head back home. The store was a bit crowded, but honestly, that’s to be expected at a quality exotic pet shop. What stood out most was how well the animals are cared for. Everything was clean, organized, and maintained to a high standard. The owners clearly take great pride in what they do. One thing that really impressed us—something we’ve never experienced anywhere else—is that they require customers to wash their hands before handling any animals. That level of care and biosecurity speaks volumes. We are now on our fourth pet from Panhandle Exotics, and we wouldn’t consider going anywhere else. Our most recent addition came home on Saturday, June 13th, and the owners have already followed up to make sure everything is going well. Don’t believe any negative reviews—you won’t find a better exotic pet store in Florida, and possibly even in the surrounding states. Our only wish? That they would open a location closer to the Tampa Bay area!”
