Tucked away in Colorado Springs, Tropical Treasures LLC is owner Nathan's personal showcase of aquatic obsession — a store where cichlids reign supreme and the livestock health consistently impresses visitors. Multiple reviewers single out the cichlid selection as the best in the area, with vibrant specimens like firemouths drawing repeat customers who were originally referred by other shops. Beyond cichlids, the store stocks both freshwater and saltwater fish, corals, live plants, shrimp, and what regulars describe as an 'impressively eclectic' mix of uncommon species you won't find at chain pet stores.
Nathan (Nate to regulars) is the store's biggest asset and, depending on the day, its most polarizing figure. The majority of reviews paint him as deeply knowledgeable — someone who'll walk you through setting up a new 90-gallon tank, explain species compatibility, and talk you out of buying things you don't actually need. He personally performs bi-weekly maintenance on customers' home aquariums, including tanks as large as 150 gallons, and has earned loyalty by responding to equipment emergencies.
One customer credited him with making their tank look better than it had in five years after a single cleaning visit. The store itself carries tanks — including used setups at approachable prices — along with supplies, filtration equipment, and sand. Reviewers note the cool, curated vibe of the shop, with rows of well-maintained display tanks housing healthy, vibrant fish.
In-store water testing and setup guidance are available for newcomers to the hobby. The honest caveat: a handful of reviews mention feeling ignored or encountering indifferent service, particularly from staff behind the counter. The experience seems to hinge on catching Nathan at the right moment.
When he's engaged, the expertise and genuine care for aquatic life are hard to match anywhere in Colorado Springs. The store's strength is its livestock quality and Nathan's willingness to share real, practical knowledge — not upsell unnecessary products. For cichlid enthusiasts especially, it's a destination worth the drive.

I stand around feeling ignored waiting to ask questions. The owner is rude, too busy outside smoking, or cleaning aquariums.

Although they did have the shrimp we were looking for, he gave the impression that he couldn't be bothered to help us. We asked questions and tried to direct his attention to the creatures we were interested in and he blew us off, barely glancing at them. We did end up getting 6 shrimp but once we were outside we saw that one was already dead. It was such a poor experience with the gentleman that we didnt even want to go back inside to discuss it.

Such an amazing store. This place has the healthiest fish and plants and very good prices. I’m so happy with my purchases here I wish more businesses took so much pride and care in what they do. I’ll never purchase anywhere else. I’m hooked lol. I felt like I needed to come back and edit my review. This business will not sell you stuff you don’t need they will just make everything easier for you. A business I trust and you can too

The person working was on his phone. Didn't greet us when we walked in. Was staring at his phone. Walked around the store to see the fish. When I walked up to counter I said excuse me, the guy took another 45 sec or so to finish looking at his phone to even acknowledge me. He seemed like he didn't want to help so I didn't make a purchase.
