Aqua Imports in Boulder, Colorado has built a reputation as one of the Front Range's most comprehensive aquatic shops, drawing customers from Longmont, Aurora, and beyond with a livestock selection that spans both freshwater tropicals and saltwater reef specimens. The store's Google listing barely hints at what's inside: rows of clean, well-maintained tanks housing everything from purple fin hillstream loaches and starry blennies to aptasia-eating filefish, clownfish pairs, and an impressive range of exotic freshwater species that are genuinely difficult to find elsewhere. The live plant section earns repeat visits on its own, and the invertebrate offerings — shrimp, snails, and reef-compatible creatures — round out a selection that covers most hobbyist wish lists.
Multiple reviewers note the overall health of the livestock, pointing to clear water, disease-free tanks, and fish that thrive long after purchase. Aqua Imports also operates a substantial online store that ships nationwide, and many customers praise the packaging and overnight delivery speed — fish shipped from Colorado at 7 PM arriving by 9 AM the next morning in crystal-clear water. The team has demonstrated real care in transit decisions, proactively delaying shipments during winter storms rather than risking livestock.
They also offer photo verification of fish before shipping, a meaningful touch for rare species buyers. That said, some online customers have reported frustrations with the shipping insurance process and replacement policies for DOA fish, so it's worth reading the fine print before placing large orders. In-store, the staff generally earns high marks for knowledge and friendliness, though a few visitors have experienced long waits for assistance.
The shop also provides tank maintenance services for local clients, though scheduling reliability has been inconsistent based on at least one account. What keeps Boulder-area aquarists coming back — and driving past competing shops to get here — is the sheer breadth of healthy livestock under one roof, the fair pricing, and a team that clearly prioritizes the well-being of the animals they sell. For anyone building a freshwater community tank or stocking a reef setup along the Colorado Front Range, Aqua Imports is a destination worth the trip.

Awesome place. Tons of cool fish and their plants are pretty good. We've been back here several times.

One of the most disappointing aquatic experiences we’ve ever had. We live in Longmont so there are not many options for other stores. Both times we’ve been, the staff have been stand off-ish and lacked knowledge. Seems 30% of the fish are on hold. Always stand around for about 15-20 minutes looking for someone to help us. Will be driving to Aurora instead to avoid this place.

I can’t say enough good things about this company and the care they show for their fish. We had a winter storm around my original shipment date, and instead of risking the fish just to get an order out quickly, they proactively moved my shipment from January 27th to February 3rd to ensure safe conditions. That level of responsibility and ethics really means a lot to me. It’s clear they value the health and livelihood of their fish over money or instant gratification, which says everything about how they run their business. I’m incredibly grateful for the care, communication, and integrity they showed, and I’ll absolutely continue ordering from them with confidence. Thank you Aqua-imports.

placed an online order-to buy an eel I’m experienced aquarist The eel was $19 To make the $60 of packing and shipping worthwhile I placed a $300 order As is standard I ordered 3 to ensure 1 male and 2 females On the check out page there was a place for shipping notes routing ins was added to the invoice with no option to remove it and no link to read the ins info I assumed this was added so the shipper could replace dead fish They called me before shipping as one of the fish had Ich we spent an hour deciding on a sub as I unpacked the fish I noticed the eel was in a bag that was the same length as the eel and it was dead Eels are fickle Any stress and they die to pack an eel with no room was bad and he died Other bags had leaked and barely had water to cover the fish I combined fish from two bags into one so there would be water for acclimation I noticed that they had sent all females for the live bearing fish a pro should know not to do that it was apparent that the pics online had been colorized because the fish did not have the intense color displayed in pics Had real pics been posted my order would have been different if I had known they were going to unload females I would not have ordered them because they look like ditch minnows I told a manager about my issues mainly because the one fish that prompted a $300 order was dead due to sick stock or improper packaging and they are responsible The manager said I should have specified the sexes of the fish but there was no place on the fish page to choose sexes only a drop down menu to select size and quantity the only place for notes was in shipping instructions and pros should know better When I pressed him on this he admitted that for in store sales they ask what sex they want the fish to be but not for online sales They informed me that I would have to repay shipping and packaging to replace the eel with no guarantee it will arrive alive. when I asked about the insurance they had forced me to buy they told me that I would have to contact the insurance carrier and file a claim and even then they probably wouldn't cover the shipping I told them that they should be the one to do everything to replace the eel that died in transit CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!Shipping is the responsibility of the shipper I thought the forced insurance on the checkout was so the shipper could cover these kinds of issues since there was no link to review the terms and conditions And there was no place to unselect the insurance The manager could not explain to me why there was a forced insurance if it didn't cover dead fish their online ordering is a scam They deceive with color enhanced pics, unload excess female fish, they force you to buy insurance that has no benefit to you if the fish arrive dead, and they deflect blame I sent an email detailing all this, the owner replied and said that their policy stands I have scoured the website and I cannot find any information that tells the online ordering customers that they will not honor replacing dead fish even if they perform poor packaging or send sick stock They said they were a small store and couldn't afford to absorb replacement costs for dead fish. Then don't sell online!!!! Or actually purchase insurance to cover replacements including shipping I went to the post office and UPS store and got the overnight shipping cost for the box they sent with water in all the bags and it was half what they charged for shipping costs they charged $15 for all the packaging material DON'T ORDER FROM THIS STORE Shop at your local store this company scams by using bait and switch tactics with fake pics, offloading undesirable female, poorly package the fish, forcing purchase of useless insurance, and deflecting blame I asked how it would go if I paid the $60 shipping and packaging for the eel to be replaced and it also arrived dead they had no answer They may be nice in person but they have no problem cheating online customers

This is my first time ordering from Aqua Import. Their live stock selection are huge, carrying some rare exotic one that you couldn’t find anywhere else. They can verify the fish with pictures before shipping (important). Packaging was beyond standard and the shipping was quick (the fish shipped from Colorado at 7pm and I got the fish at 9am in the morning). Fish came in healthy, water still crystal clear. I will not hesitate to order more from them ! PS: please take a look more often on Aqua Import Fanpage messages 😂

Extremely upset and shocked at the way their business is handled. We use this company to make sure our fish tank is clean and taken care of. I called many times to have them check on our tank and ended up having a few of our fish die because of this. The manager stated we were deleted off their scheduling somehow? After years of working with us? They said nothing to make the situation better. Not ok do not take your business here.
