Tucked into Vista, California, Underwater Environments is a dedicated pond supply shop that has built a loyal following among North County San Diego pond keepers over the years — first from their original location in Olivenhain near Sunshine Gardens in Encinitas, and now at their permanent home on South Santa Fe Avenue. The focus here is singular and deep: koi, pond fish, aquatic plants, and the equipment to keep everything thriving. The koi selection is the main draw.
Underwater Environments imports hand-picked koi directly from Japan, and customers regularly praise the health and beauty of the fish. Tubs are clean, fish are sociable, and the range runs from affordable small tosai to stunning, large specimens. Beyond koi, you'll find goldfish, Chinese high fin sharks, and even mosquito fish available through San Diego County vector control.
The aquatic plant selection is equally impressive — water lettuce, lotus flowers, lily pads, and a rotating variety of pond plants, including some uncommon options that are hard to find elsewhere in the region. The staff — including Melinda, Scott, Jeremiah, Jason, Gavin, and Jessica — are frequently cited for their pond knowledge. Several reviewers mention receiving detailed guidance on pond setup, filtration, and maintenance.
Jeremiah in particular has earned a reputation for hands-on pond servicing, from diagnosing fountain failures to tracing broken wires and explaining plumbing systems. The shop also builds ponds, a service that has drawn praise from customers impressed with the craftsmanship. The space itself is small, and some visitors note tight parking in the area.
But what Underwater Environments lacks in square footage, it makes up for in specialization. This isn't a general pet store trying to do everything — it's a pond-focused operation run by people who clearly care about the craft. If you're building or maintaining a pond anywhere in the Vista or greater North County area, this is the local resource that long-time customers have relied on for over a decade.

They have the healthiest Koi and the most beautiful variety of Koi. The plants as well are very well taken care of. We will continue to buy from them. We would definitely recommend this place!

They offer Koi that are hand picked and imported directly from Japan. The store itself is small but carries most things a pond needs. Jeremiah, services Koi ponds, is very knowledgeable and goes out of his way to help. You shouldn't just buy Koi anywhere, or you could chance introducing your pond to disease or parasites (I know from experience). But all the Koi we have from UE have been, and still are, beautiful and healthy.

I went to pick up some mosquito fish. I appreciate that they are available through San Diego county vector control. I received service immediately. There were containers with different plants and fish. I also bought some water lettuce to give the fish some cover.

Jeremiah was very courteous and knowledgeable and diagnosed our fountain failure. Found broken wire and pipe caused by large flower pot falling a few weeks earlier. Showed us how to use the maze of pipes and dials behind fountain. All repaired and we now understand how our system works. Will call them for all future repairs. Didn't try to sell us stuff we didn't need, honest and fair pricing.

Scott is super helpful and is very knowledgeable. I highly recommend Underwater Environments!

TL;DR: Will not be returning due to being sold previously used products as new. The lone staff that assisted was extremely rude, unhelpful, and gave way for a very uncomfortable situation. Cons: - Sells previously used products as new + Purchased a new pressure filter and new water pump that had clearly been previously used. Both products were missing package sealing, original interior packing materials, and product parts. One of the products had parts in a Ziploc sandwich bag. The other product had several signs of wear on the kit and was missing parts that were listed in the manual. - Rude and unhelpful staff + Arrived about 3 hours before closing and the lone staff was very unapproachable and made it clear he had no interest in offering advice about initial pond set up or assisting. Felt that the staff wanted us to leave and seemed irritated although we were polite and respectful. Felt unwelcome and uncomfortable with the situation that I had told several friends about the negative encounter. - Bad location + Little to no parking at location with tons of pedestrian, transit (train and bus), and car traffic. Location is difficult to park at and leaving can be very difficult. There is a high number of transients in this location felt unsafe. Pros: - Good selection of plants with some uncommon options. - Koi and goldfish were healthy and well cared for. Tanks/tubs seemed clean.

It is a small place but they have a great variety of koi and pond plants. The prices for koi started low for small and went up to giant beautiful ones. The staff were knowledgeable and helpful. They had the supplies I needed at a reasonable price. The koi were very sociable in our pond and now the other fish are too. Great addition to our pond. Highly recommend!
