Tulare Mercantile is the kind of store that simply doesn't exist anymore — a family-owned general mercantile in downtown Tulare, California, where you can walk in for bicycle brakes, pick up a sewing machine repair, and leave with a bag of healthy shrimp and a new aquarium setup. Run by longtime owner Nancy Castleman and her family, this eclectic shop has been a community fixture for over four decades, and its aquatics section is a genuine draw for fishkeepers across the Central Valley. The fish department punches well above what you'd expect from a multi-category mercantile.
Reviewers consistently praise the diversity of freshwater tropical fish, noting healthy stock that includes a solid selection of shrimp, snails, and various aquarium species. They also carry pond fish, making Tulare Mercantile one of the few local options for pond keepers in the area. Aquarium supplies, tanks, and live plants round out the aquatics offerings, and the staff — Nancy in particular — are frequently described as genuinely knowledgeable about fishkeeping, happy to walk customers through care requirements and stocking choices.
Pricing comes up again and again as a strong point. In a region where dedicated fish stores are sparse, Tulare Mercantile fills a real gap with fair prices and personal service. The store also sells feeder mice and rats for reptile owners, which has built a loyal following among snake keepers who've been returning for years.
The atmosphere is pure small-town charm: crowded aisles packed with everything from karate gear to antiques to bike parts, all overseen by staff who greet you the moment you walk in. It's the kind of place where you stop in for one thing and spend an hour browsing. For freshwater hobbyists and pond enthusiasts in Tulare and the surrounding San Joaquin Valley, this mercantile offers something no chain store can — real expertise, healthy fish, and a shopping experience rooted in decades of community trust.

Horrible customer service . Terrible prices. The place smells horrible like mice and roach poop. I have no idea how that store is still open. Gross. Asked when is a good time to come to see a mechanic she said if she knew she would tell me very pompous and rude .. don't waist your time at this Gross place.
