About
Aquatica Corals and Custom Aquariums is a saltwater-only aquarium store in San Marcos, CA, and stepping inside feels less like a pet shop than a slice of the reef itself — tanks glowing with vibrant corals, seahorses, gobies, peppermint shrimp, and marine fish that regulars swear rival the displays at Scripps Aquarium. Owner Steve has built the shop into a destination for reef keepers across San Diego's North County, and the team around him — Ethan, Bree, and Dan among them — keeps that reputation going. The coral nursery is the heart of the store.
Hobbyists come specifically for the variety and quality, and recent visitors have walked out with bright zoas and a torch coral, mentioning that prices have come down and now run competitive with other San Diego shops. A visiting coral biologist praised the staff's knowledge and husbandry as excellent, and one customer credited Ethan with saving their tank while Bree helped them sort out the rest. If you're after a yellow tang, clownfish, or a hard-to-find coral for sale in San Marcos, CA, this is the kind of place that will track it down rather than upsell you something that won't suit your system.
Beyond livestock, Aquatica is known for custom aquarium builds and large-tank relocations — moving 400-gallon glass systems up multiple flights of stairs, setting up Red Sea Reefer and Waterbox tanks, and helping hobbyists graduate from small Innovative Marine starters to full reef displays. They carry Red Sea salt and equipment and stock supplies and fish food alongside the livestock, so you can grab Mysis or a maintenance part on the same trip. What keeps customers loyal is the ongoing reef maintenance service: after a build, the team returns for regular cleanings and feedings, so a stunning saltwater display can live in a home or office without the owner ever mixing salt or hauling buckets.
Steve is famously direct — if a fish won't work in your tank, he'll say so and point you toward a better pick. Longtime reefers drift in just to talk shop, which is exactly why this San Marcos aquarium store feels like a community as much as a place to buy coral.

— Nicholas Levitt5.02 weeks ago“Stopped into the shop yesterday on the way home and was really happy with what I saw. Been awhile since I've been here but tons of corals seems like prices have gone down and are very competitive to my other lfs in San Diego. Picked up some really nice zoa and a torch. I would highly recommend this place especially if you're in North county San Diego”
— John Casper5.03 weeks ago“I was at job site near by so I stopped by for some Mysis on the way home, I paid not looking at the price because Mysis is usually pretty cheap. I got to my truck and realized I almost paid $15 for a 3.5g Hikari Mysis cube pack, so I went and asked for a refund since my LFS sells them for $6. Walked in and asked for a refund I let the owner know it’s because of the high price, owner rolled his eyes and got out of his chair to do the refund then proceeded to say “that’s how not it works” I was so confused what do you mean that’s not how it works? I just want a refund Lol. A while ago I went in to this fish store and asked to try on a camera lens for my phone and I accidentally dropped it and it broke I apologized and owner didn’t seem bothered or say anything I completely forgot about this and he somehow remembered lol. He tried using this against me during the refund that I never paid for the lens I broke, if he really was bothered he should said something at that moment but to bring it up such a long time after that is ridiculous. The owner is a complete joke accidents happen in a business buddy….. I told him they are much cheaper at AW he said next time go to AW, Definitely won’t be back I got my refund and walked out told him to have a good day.Owner is a clown his coral is so overpriced selling a $30 black light torch for $75. Take your business elsewhere this guy hold grudges over an accident that happened a long time ago lol. I wish I could rate zero stars specifically for the owner behavior.”

I had so many questions about my freshwater tank and he pointed me in every correct direction. Family environment and he puts his knowledge and his heart into every tank and every client to make sure we’re all satisfied. I will not be going anywhere else.”
