About
Tucked into a small strip mall behind the Chevron station in Orinda, CA, The Fish Barn is the kind of freshwater fish store East Bay aquarists happily drive out of their way to visit. It's a compact, immaculately kept shop where every tank is clean, the fish are healthy and active, and the display aquascapes are beautiful enough to send you home rethinking your own setup. Regulars describe it less like a retail stop and more like time spent with a mentor who genuinely wants your tank to succeed.
Owner AJ and longtime staffer Jay get named again and again in reviews for their patience and encyclopedic knowledge of plants, fish, hardscape, and equipment. They'll run a water test and explain the results, walk a first-timer through soil, wood, and stone for a starter tank, or write out a day-by-day medication schedule when a fish falls ill. One customer came in with a major water-quality problem and left with a bag of established media to stabilize their biome — the sort of help you rarely find anywhere else.
The store leans hard into nano and planted tanks. You'll find gorgeous, healthy aquatic plants for sale in Orinda, CA, alongside nano-friendly livestock like celestial pearl danios, pygmy corydoras, green neon tetras, and Phoenix rasboras, plus shrimp and the occasional uncommon variety that's genuinely hard to find elsewhere. Cardinal tetras, snails, and a deep bench of dry goods, driftwood, and hardscape materials round out the inventory, and prices stay fair enough that regulars skip the usual online price-checking ritual.
If you've been searching for an aquascaping-minded fish store near me in the East Bay, this is the one. It's a small operation that gets busy, so a little patience during peak hours pays off — but you'll walk out with healthy fish and honest, hands-on guidance every single time.

— Angie Faith5.04 weeks ago“AJ and Jay at The Fish Barn generously offer the most knowledgeable and patient support for any aquarium or aquascaping beginner or advanced hobbyist. They deftly manage a busy store and have encyclopedic knowledge on plants, fish, hardscape, and equipment. I came into the store with my three year old and left with a 45U tank, with all the soil, wood, stone, and plants I needed to set up a starter tank that weekend. They have also given invaluable advice as I've been setting up a more complicated 60CS tank. AJ also encouraged me to go to the AGA convention in Sacramento in April 2026, which has inspired me to imagine my next tank!”
— Jason Droll5.0a month ago“I ABSOLUTELY LOVE going to The Fish Barn! Their tanks are always well taken care of, their fish are always in good health, and it's very welcoming! I always have an excellent experience when coming here! All the fish and shrimp I have gotten have have been healthy and active! If there is a fish you want but are having a hard time finding, definitely call AJ he just might have what your looking for! If he doesn't have it he might order them for the store, he will definitely let you know if it's a possibility!”
— Crystal Wallis5.0a month ago“I went in a week ago because my tank was having a major water quality issue. The man at the counter was tremendously helpful. He did a water test and explained the results. Also, gave me a bag from one of his tanks to get my biome stabilized. It totally worked! I can’t thank him enough. Also, my goldfish had a swim bladder issue and he told me about epsom salt treatment and it saved the fish too! Thank you very much Fish Barn!! Next move is to transfer the huge fish to a friend’s pond now that they are healthy again.”
— Tom Gears5.0a month ago“Absolutely fantastic selection with very happy healthy fish and honest and trustworthy team. I will come here when I setup a freshwater tank.”
— Taegh Sokhey5.0a month ago“This place is amazing. Everyone in there is so educated on fish and wha it takes to house them. My kids and I went in to check out some fish and left with a full set up. The best part, the pricing was fair. Thanks for being patient with us and making sure we got what we needed. Chris”
