About

Tucked away in Orinda, California, The Fish Barn operates as a small but deeply intentional freshwater aquarium shop that has earned a devoted following in the East Bay. What sets it apart isn't size or flashiness — it's trust. Customers routinely describe a level of care and patience from the staff that feels more like working with a mentor than shopping at a retail store.

The livestock selection leans heavily freshwater, with a curated inventory of healthy, vibrant fish. You'll find community favorites like Cardinal tetras alongside nano-friendly species like celestial pearl danios and pygmy corydoras. The shop deliberately avoids stocking ethically questionable species like red-tail catfish and pacu — a philosophical choice that resonates with their customer base.

One reviewer specifically noted they carry everything you'd want short of niche specialty fish like discus. Plants are a real draw here. The Fish Barn maintains a solid selection of aquatic plants alongside impressive display aquascapes that double as inspiration for planted tank enthusiasts.

Their equipment range covers multiple price points and sizes, and customers consistently report that prices are fair enough to skip the usual online price-checking ritual. A standout detail: The Fish Barn sources fish from local hobbyists whenever possible, supporting the regional aquarium community in a way few shops bother to do. Even their fish-packing method — double-bagged for safe transport — reflects an attention to detail that runs through every aspect of the operation.

Staff members Jay and AJ are mentioned by name as particularly helpful, especially for newcomers setting up their first tanks. The owner is praised for extraordinary patience, walking customers through equipment options and answering endless questions without rushing. This is a small operation, and it gets busy — reviewers advise patience during peak times.

But that popularity is itself a testament. In a market where many local fish stores struggle, The Fish Barn thrives because it prioritizes healthy livestock, honest guidance, and genuine relationships with the people who walk through the door.

  • “It is always a good experience visiting The Fish Barn. Conscientious, knowledgable and helpful staff and healthy fish. I also really like that they acquire what fish they can from local hobbyists. I just got some CPDs and pygmy cories which are now swimming happily in my nano aquarium. Thanks guys.”

  • “After weeks of planning and visiting multiple aquarium shops, within moments we knew this was the store for us! The owner(not putting names as sometimes reviews are flagged for that) showed an unbelievable amount of care and patience. He took us through all the in and outs. Showed us a range of equipment, both in size and cost. And listened and answered to the million of questions we had. We ended up buying everything we needed there as it felt like we were working with someone we could trust. On our second visit he has another person who worked there that was equally as knowledgeable and helpful! Thank you guys!!! You’ve made this so fun and exciting!! ALSO WE HAD SOME RANDOM SNAILS APPEAR AND WE ARE SO HAPPY!!!!”

  • “Amazing experience at Fish Barn! Fish Barn is hands down THE BEST LFS I’ve been to. The staff here are incredibly friendly and genuinely passionate about what they do, they take the time to answer questions, offer advice, and make sure you leave with exactly what you need. Their fish selection is fantastic, with a wide variety of healthy, vibrant fish that are clearly well cared for. It's a small operation, and they can get extremely busy, so if you visit during a busy period be patient because the wait is well worth it.”

  • “The staff is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and friendly. The inventory of livestock is complete and have everything you need except niche stuff like discus. Also, a huge bonus, they don't stock morally bankrupt species like red-tail cats and pacu. They stock good quality products at completely fair prices, I don't find the need to check online prices. Highly recommended.”

  • “Very nice, clean and organized shop. Went here for the first time since the other shop I was going to was closed for Labor Day. They were very knowledgeable and thorough based on the conversation they were having with the other customers. They have some really nice aquascape/display tank. Decent fish selection and a good amount of plants. Will definitely visit again if I'm in the area!”
