Jan's Tropical Fish in Montclair, California has been a fixture of the Inland Empire aquarium scene for over two decades, and the loyalty it inspires is real — some customers have been walking through its doors since childhood. This family-owned shop packs an impressive amount of livestock and supplies into its space, covering both freshwater and saltwater fish alongside invertebrates, shrimp, and the occasional rare or obscure species that keeps hobbyists coming back weekly. The freshwater selection runs deep: cichlids like kribensis, oscars, and peacock gudgeons share space with goldfish varieties (including panda orandas), bettas, tetras, guppies, mollies, and platys.
Saltwater enthusiasts will find clownfish and other marine livestock, plus RODI water and premixed saltwater available for purchase — a genuine convenience for reef keepers. Koi for ponds round out the livestock offerings. On the equipment and supply side, Jan's operates as a true one-stop shop.
Tank equipment, plumbing, décor, water treatment, medications, and a wide selection of dry and frozen foods line the aisles. They carry Xtreme Pellets and flakes, which reviewers note are hard to find locally. The store also handles custom tank builds — one customer ordered an 8-foot, 300-gallon monster tank with sump for an arowana and praised the build quality and delivery.
Staff members like Duke and Ken earn consistent praise for their knowledge and willingness to share honest advice. Multiple reviewers mention being guided through their first tank setup with patience, and the store has been known to hold back fish that aren't healthy enough to sell — a practice that speaks to their integrity. The store isn't without its quirks: aisles can be tight, the live plant section is modest, and experienced hobbyists recommend quarantining new additions.
But for reliable livestock, fair prices, and the kind of personalized service that big-box retailers can't replicate, Jan's delivers. The store dog is a nice bonus.

The friendly staff came up to ask if I needed anything. I walked in and felt that they are fully stocked with livestock and also supplies! I really enjoy their hospitality and would definitely recommend the local friends to come over! We gotta support small business!

Best fish store in the Inland Empire hands down. Jan’s Tropical Fish consistently has healthy fish, a great selection, and a truly complete store. From tank equipment and plumbing to food and accessories, they have everything you need in one place. I ordered a custom monster tank 8 feet, around 300 gallons including a sump for my arowana, and it was delivered looking amazing. The build quality was excellent and it turned out exactly how I wanted. Huge shoutout to Duke and Ken. They’re incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and always willing to share advice and make sure you get the right setup. Their selection is impressive, covering both freshwater and saltwater fish. This is the kind of LFS that keeps you coming back. I’ll definitely be a customer for life.

I just want to thank you for being here. This particular store has been around since I was 8-9 years old, im 31 now, and each and every time I go this store sparks new ideas, wants and even revived my passion for this hobby!! Their fish are beautiful and very well taken care of! Anything you buy from a goldfish to clown fish, they will always stick out amongst the rest of your finned children. They even add new species to their stock like peacock gudgeons!

Amazing family owned store. Had the perfect selection for getting my beta tank set up. Happy to support stores like this instead of petco/smart. Bonus points for their cute store dog. I will be back!

I stop in every once in awhile when I'm in the area. You will need to quarentine any stocking you get from there before adding to your main tanks. Shop is clean and well stocked for its size. Live plant section is very small but it is there. Employees always willing to help. Have a decent selection of variety of freshwater and small selection of saltwater fish. I am fortunate to live closer to CK, and while I recognize not every LFS can be or is a CK, this is not bad for what it is.

I came across this location a few months back. 2 weeks ago I purchased a panda oranda which I was happy. other shops in the area didn't have a good selection of Orlanda's. I came back for a third time today to purchase some fish food and a power filter. The staff was very knowledgeable on what exactly I needed. this is definitely my new to go spot.

Tons of dry and frozen food options and good prices. They also have RODI and premixed saltwater available.
