Tucked into Mission Viejo, Ocean's Tropical Fish has earned a loyal following among Southern California aquarists with its strong dual focus on saltwater and freshwater livestock. The store's saltwater section is particularly impressive, featuring unique corals and reef fish that draw experienced hobbyists running tanks as large as 150 gallons. The freshwater side, while described by some as more compact, still delivers — from koi bettas and Colombian tetras to guppies and mystery snails.
David, frequently mentioned by name in reviews, is a major draw. Customers describe him as honest and genuinely invested in their success, whether he's walking a newcomer through nitrogen cycling for a 5-gallon betta tank or helping a veteran reefer pick out corals appropriate for their experience level. He's known for telling people what they don't need just as readily as what they do, and his willingness to field endless questions — sometimes from three or four customers simultaneously — has built real trust.
The store's atmosphere gets consistent praise: clean tanks, good music, and a cool vibe that makes browsing feel more like visiting an aquarium than a retail shop. Staff have gone above and beyond in unexpected ways, from professionally packing koi for shipping to New York to accepting baby fish for store credit when customers' Colombian tetras wouldn't stop spawning. The selection extends beyond livestock to include some equipment and hardscape, though dry goods aren't the primary focus.
Fish health is a standout — reviewers consistently report that purchases arrive home active and thriving, from sand-sifting starfish to vibrant guppies that go on to breed prolifically. Ocean's Tropical Fish rewards repeat visits. The kind of store where you stop in for fish food and leave an hour later with a new coral and a deeper understanding of your tank's chemistry, it's built on relationships rather than transactions.
For aquarists in the Mission Viejo area, it's become a cornerstone of the local hobby community.

Nice selection of salt water fish and coral, selection of freshwater is somewhat smaller but still great, they do sell some equipment and hardscape but not their main focus. The store is very clean and has a cool vibe.

Phenomenal fish store for saltwater and freshwater tanks. The employees are always super knowledgeable and helpful, they helped me with my tank setup and now picking fish compatible with my tank and best practices. So many varieties of fish and coral - you can spend hours here! Genuinely a great shop. Highly recommend.

Hi Everyone! So i just bought my new betta fish from this store! His name is Jellybean. I would say this store is 5/5 worth the visit. So timeline, on october 30th i came to visit the store on my lunch break. I used to visit this store in 2021 and 2022 when i use to own a couple of freshwater fishes. I stopped the hobby and didn't get back in until recently. I recalled this store was fantastic then and i would say its fantastic now. I was browsing through the betta fish selection and was pretty surprised on what they had. After browsing for about 20 mins, this koi betta caught my eye. Lets just say, i took a picture of him and his friends and sent it to my partner. My partner also agreed on selecting this particular betta. It definitely caught both of our eyes. The next day on October 31st i came back to the store and this betta was still on the shelf. Was i a bit worried that he might have been sold in 24 hours? I did but that's because i was overthinking. But lets just say the world was alligned and i was meant to get this fish. The clerk who was working at the time was very friendly and very helpful. I have a 5 gallon tank that i have been cycling for over 7 weeks before homing this betta fish. The clerk was very informative and supportive on my purchase of this fish and give me very insightful advice about my tank cycling since i weekly water test and keep a excel sheet of my nitrogen cycle. He definitely advise me that my tank was perfect for this fish to come home too. I also bought a couple of betta fish food which was reasonably priced. Overall, i would highly recommend to everyone. My partner and i are planning to come back to purchase another betta fish in the future months!! So that my partner has his own one as well 😂😂.

I’ve been running a 150-gallon saltwater tank for years, and A La Cart is hands down one of the best stores around. They have a great selection for both beginners and advanced reef keepers, with unique corals and fish you won’t find anywhere else 🐠. David is the real reason I keep coming back — he’s professional, honest, and only sells you what you actually need. Every visit is a great experience, and it’s hard not to leave without picking up something new. Highly recommend! 🌊

Excellent care for their stock, the fish have always been healthy every time I visit. They offer store credit for fish too, came in handy when our Colombian tetras were spawning nonstop in our mini pond. Call ahead to double check if they'll accept your baby fish though.
