About
West Lake Aquarium in La Habra is one of those neighborhood fish shops where the owner has been doing things his way for over 50 years — and the loyalists keep coming back. Run by Patrick, this small freshwater-focused store specializes in breeding discus and angelfish on-site, and reviewers consistently note that the fish are healthy and homegrown. Patrick also breeds his own guppies, sometimes offering bundle deals like 20 for $60 and tossing in a few extra just because.
The shop carries a curated selection of tropical freshwater species that go well beyond what you'd find at a big-box pet store. Customers have picked up chili rasboras here and other less common varieties, praising the store's ability to stock interesting fish at fair prices. Frozen fish food and accessories round out the inventory, though this isn't the kind of place you visit for a massive dry goods selection — you come for the fish and the expertise behind them.
Patrick is an old-school fishkeeper, and most reviewers describe him as generous with advice, helping customers with aquarium setup and long-term care. Some visitors have noted that the store is small and the tanks could use more upkeep, with a couple of reviews mentioning algae buildup. And Patrick's personality doesn't land with everyone — while many find him warm and hilarious, a few have found him curt or watchful.
Still, the long-timers speak volumes. One customer has been coming since 1999. Another kicked themselves for living in La Habra over a decade before discovering the place.
The appeal is clear: locally bred angelfish and discus from a seasoned hobbyist who prices fairly and knows his fish inside and out. If you're in the La Habra area and keeping freshwater tropicals, West Lake Aquarium is a neighborhood institution worth your time.

Customer reviews
“The kind gentleman who owns and runs this tropical fish store is wonderful. He has helped me with my aquarium every step of the way.”
— Rg5.0Edited 17 hours ago“Pretty small fish store but quality fish with quality prices. This fish store has the best prices out of all the fish stores I've been to, and they offer bundle deals like 20 guppys for $60 dollars but the owner will throw in extra 5 guppys just for the sake of it. The owner breeds the guppy's themselves and they are in tip top shape. Also the owner has also been in business for over 50 years and knows a lot about aquatic life and fish. The prices are unbeatable here compare to other stores. Not to mention that the owner is a hiralious guy with tons of humor. Overall I recommend this store if you're not trying to spend top dollars.”
— Dreamchaser5.04 months ago“The tanks looked dirty, and the overall cleanliness of the store was lacking. The prices for the fish were also quite high compared to other places. I wouldn't recommend this store if you're looking for a clean and affordable aquarium shopping experience. There are better options out there.”

— william montoya5.02 years ago“I’ve lived in la habra for over 10 plus yrs and I regret not knowing about this fish store! I’ve been going to Patrick’s (owner) fish store for about 2yr. Patrick is really a kind down to earth guy! He has a variety of fresh water fish and specialized in discus and Angel fish, which he breeds himself! If you’re around la habra or live in la habra go visit West Lake Aquarium for all your fish keeping needs.”
