Carson Tropical Fish in Hawaiian Gardens, California has been a fixture of the local aquarium scene for over 25 years, and under new management, reviewers say the store has expanded its inventory significantly — particularly in saltwater fish, corals, and reef supplies. The shop stocks both freshwater and saltwater livestock alongside a robust selection of live plants, dry goods, and new and used equipment, making it a legitimate one-stop destination for hobbyists across Southern California. The reef selection draws particular praise.
Reviewers describe "amazing corals" and call the store a perfect place for reef corals, with one hobbyist noting they picked up a clam for their reef tank. Freshwater keepers will find a solid plant selection — one reviewer called it especially good — along with community fish like rasboras and danios. Staff member Bryce gets personal shout-outs for making customers feel welcome, and the team's willingness to test water and advise patience over a quick sale speaks volumes.
Multiple reviewers recount being told to wait a week for their tanks to cycle rather than being pushed into buying fish that would die. Pricing is a consistent highlight. Used equipment deals, competitive frozen food prices, and reasonable tank costs (one customer snagged a 90-gallon for $400) keep people driving from as far as downtown Long Beach.
The store also runs a points loyalty program — one point per dollar spent, with 100 points earning $5 in store credit. The store isn't without its rough edges. Some reviewers note that the space can feel cluttered or run-down, and there are occasional complaints about fish health, including sick Galaxy Danios and a strict 24-hour return policy that frustrates buyers when livestock arrives compromised.
Tank cleanliness has also been flagged by a few visitors. Still, the overall picture is of a store that prioritizes honest advice and fair pricing over flash. A resident macaw named Blue greets visitors, and long-time customers keep returning for the value, the selection, and the kind of knowledgeable staff interaction that's increasingly rare in the hobby.

Under new management and they have way more fish and coral options at reasonable prices. BEST fish store in town!

This place has got it all. I went in for some fish for my new tank. The owner was there and he was asking me about my new setup, and if I had brought some water to test since it was newly setup. I actually had since I was having some algae issues. After testing my water he recommended I wait to add fish until another week so my tank would fully cycle. These guys are awesome, instead of selling me some fish to make money, that would die, they did the right thing. Shop looks great, and tons of pretty much everything to choose from. Frozen food was also really good price, better than I've seen anywhere else. Definitely recommend and will be back.

Great shop, very knowledgeable. They have a lot of nice healthy fish and tons of dry goods and tanks. Staff are very knowledgeable, and won't sell you something just to sell you something. They offer water testing and will let you know if your tank is ready. The actually told me to wait a week to make sure my water is fully cycled rather than just selling me something that will inevitably would die. Highly recommended.

My fav LFS! Maybe not the fanciest, but best value and selection both salt and freshwater! Like someone else said, I have a feeling the negative reviews are coming from the competition. These people are friendly and their customer service is second to none. Can't beat the prices on used equipment either

Carson tropical is under new management. All I can say is "Wow" what a big difference! They now have large selection of saltwater fish and fresh water fish as well. Also they have new a point system for every dollar you spend you get 1 point! 100point is 5 dollar store credit!!! They have a mascot named Blue. Blue is a talking macaw parrot and is so cool. Carson tropical is a LFS that you'd want to go with your family and spend time there. I highly recommend Carson tropical to anyone looking to start or just enjoy the hobby. This store is easily my favorite LFS!!!

Shop and staff are great, selection is good especially on fresh water plants… The only issue comes to fish policy 24 hours only…. After purchasing 5 danios all of them died one day apart, thinking it was my tank I went back to store to do water check…. Upon returning to the store, I noticed it all their Galaxy Danio’s were sick and dying. After informing staff there was no offer of discount…. This policy kinda pushes me away…. I may return but only for plants… I did purchase 6 strawberry rasboras mislabeled as chili rasboras… kinda sucked too but I like the way they look anyway..I really wish their fish return policy was better especially knowing their fish are sick….. great selection on saltwater products too…

The best fish store around! I live near downtown Long Beach and I don't mind driving an extra four/five miles to come here. Fishes, supplies, etc. They're your one stop shop! The pricing is fair and reasonable. Lots of value for your dollar.
