About

Aquarium City has anchored Canoga Park's fishkeeping scene for well over a decade, and the loyalty runs deep — regulars talk about shopping here since they were kids, and lifelong hobbyists who have kept tanks for years still call it their go-to fish store. Walk through the door and you are met with a sprawling, tightly packed layout of freshwater and saltwater livestock: a deep coral selection that starts around $5 frags, an aquatic plant section regulars rave about, and rows of active fish in tanks that visitors consistently note are spotless and well maintained. The livestock variety is the real draw.

You will find quality discus, peacock cichlids, geophagus, ghost knifefish, and uncommon picks like albino heckelii and red head tapajos cichlids. Angelfish and Sterbai corydoras are available in Canoga Park, CA for community and South American setups, and the planted-tank crowd comes specifically for the greenery. Hunting for healthy discus for sale near me?

This is the kind of aquarium store Valley reefers and freshwater keepers drive across Los Angeles for. The dry goods are just as serious. ADA aquascaping supplies sit beside Neptune Systems Apex controllers, Red Sea reef gear, RODI equipment, live worms for discus, and a well-stocked medication aisle.

Free water testing keeps people coming back between purchases. Staff get named constantly — Grace, Kiarash, Jason, Rayan, and owner Julian are praised for patience and genuine expertise, and longtime customers credit Nate with late-night tank rescues. One regular summed up the honest streak: the crew has talked them out of a sale when it was not right for the fish.

A resident cat rounds out the family-shop feel. Aisles run tight and a few shoppers find pricing firm, but across hundreds of reviews the pattern is deep inventory, healthy stock, and people who genuinely know the hobby. For anyone in Canoga Park, CA building a reef, a planted freshwater tank, or chasing rare cichlids, Aquarium City rewards the trip.

Customer reviews

  • “Great selection, Knowledgeable staff, but prices a bit higher and aggressive. Original plan to purchase 6 Sterbai Corys. Marked 3/$30 or $12.99 each. 1 tank only had 2 sterbai, so I had to get 4 from a different tank. I figured total should be $60 (2 batches of 3 for $30) however they charged 2 individually from the tank that only had 2. It’s a $6 difference, a petty amount compared to the thousands I’ve spent on my multiple tanks. My rating is based on the customer service, I went for the experience which normally is a happy experience and left feeling odd, not happy.”

  • “Extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff. Great selection of aquatic plants and mostly fish. Aisles are tight, so if you bring your kids in here as a faux aquarium please be mindful of the spacing.”

  • “I've been keeping aquariums for a while now, and Aquarium City has become my go-to fish store. The staff is knowledgeable, patient, and always willing to answer questions without making you feel rushed or talked down to. What I appreciate most is that they genuinely seem to care about the health of their fish and the success of their customers. On more than one occasion they've advised me to wait on a purchase, passed on a sale, or given advice that was clearly in the best interest of the fish rather than their bottom line. That's rare. The store has a great selection, the fish are active and healthy, and the tanks are consistently well maintained. Whether I'm looking for fish, plants, food, or supplies, I know I'm getting honest recommendations from people who actually know the hobby. Highly recommended for both beginners and experienced fishkeepers.”

  • “I have been a customer of Aquarium City for a long time, long enough to remember when Sean and Julian took over, that's a long time.. Tonight I had an issue with my tank, and my fish were not doing good, I called the person that does my servicing (Nate) and on a Friday night Nate came by, and found the issue within minutes, and not only fixed it, he stook around to make sure the fish were good. When you have someone grab your spiny pufferfish and hold them to the powerhead so he gets as much oxygen as possible all the while saying to him self "please don't, please don't hurt me" that's pretty awesome...”

  • “Had a great experience at Aquarium City. The staff was awesome, super friendly, and very engaging. Picked up 2 albino heckelii and 3 red head tapajos, and after letting them know I had a 3-hour drive back to the Central Valley, they made sure the fish were bagged up well for the trip. They even offered a Styrofoam box for extra insulation, which was appreciated, but we had to pass since we were packed full coming back from our holiday vacation. Happy to say all the fish made it home with no issues, acclimated great, and have already joined their tank mates. Also, kind of an odd bonus, but the restroom was extremely clean, which was definitely appreciated before getting back on the road. Great customer service all around and definitely worth the stop.”

  • “Well I've been going to this shop since I was a little kid. If you go to Petco and find their selection lacking try this place I never go home disappointed, actually I need to bring the right amount of money or I end up buying way more then I should, great staff great vibes, if you're lucky you'll see the cat .”

  • “Very nice guys very knowledgeable everybody in the shop, but this is not the reason of my post I’m new to the Aquarium world, and I got quite a bit of education from them(good and bad, which makes me not wanna buy from them anymore, which I stopped purchasing from them) But here’s my issue I spent well over $15,000 in this place on red sea equipment Eco tech Apex a lot not to mention media, pumps MP 40s so my Gripe is about defective products. I have bought four products that were quite expensive. This is only a small part of what I had purchased from them, but these four products either incompatible with my system and sold to me through them, knowing what Products I had, and some were used apparently. But bought as brand new I still haven’t been given an explanation how this could happen this particular item was a trident NP was over $700 unit. referring to the pictures below defected! I wonder so basically when I had a problem, I was told to deal with the companies that sold the product to me. so then I thought why am I buying from them when I could just go straight to Bulk reef cause this is where they get a lot of their Products and got me thinking why am I buying from them if I got a deal with them ( cause if I’m right, Apex echo tech and all the big companies are running through bulk reef ) to fix an issue you’re just a middleman and I can’t get anything done through them. Yes, this is an GRIPE! and it’s a negative review! I have bought nothing but the best that they offered for my tank. I’ve gotten quite an education from these guys watch out of the products you buy, cause I feel personally that some of these faulty items have been put on the shelf by ? or by ???? Trying to figure out levels, nitrates, phosphates, alkaline, calcium, magnesium, salinity specific gravity is all quite an education I shouldn’t have to figure out why something isn’t working and the pass old adage on that you got no control over the products that are sold. I’m sorry it doesn’t fly with me. I pay top dollar! ( They’re charging 5 to $10 more than what bulk reef or other competitors in the area charge! They are very aggressive in pricing! Of course, in my opinion! ) I want perfect running equipment. Or compensation for the waste of my time. This industry has gotten so expensive it is out of control. Never was an Offered any kind of compensation discount anything to ease my pain I never asked for one either no offered and I shouldn’t have to. Well, at the end of the day, it’s my own fault for getting into this hobby. I’m in it now too deep to stop. I’m enjoying it. I don’t enjoy the price gouging or the fact that you buy something from somebody now you have to refer to somebody else to fix your problem. Again, I’ve experienced all this in three months of being an The aquarium hobby This is only a small part of the issues that I’ve encountered sick fish, broken hoses, etc. etc. etc. I tried to stay positive through the whole thing and I’m a very passive person, but I just had to put this out there.. Don’t mean to rattle anybody’s cage, but it’s something I had to be said.”

  • “Aquarium City is alright for emergencies, but their exorbitant prices and the fact they’ll sell deformed livestock at full price are major downsides. personally for a better value and selection, I highly recommend checking out… Tokoyo Aquarium they have superior prices often 50% less and a massive selection of cichlids/misc aswell as a fairly large selection of community fish. or for the exotic and monster hobbyist Vanstar Aquarium is by far the #1 go-to for premium, rare, and monster fish in the LA area with anything from platinum arapiama to mbu puffers and even the occasional snow white black arowana. Honestly both significantly outperform Aquarium City in quality cost and variety so do with that information as you please. 👍 After seeing a recent review I feel it is important to clarify that my comments are not regarding Jennifer Pitchford’s fish Bruno. This specific review was prompted by a RTC with gill curl, which was not the first deformed fish I’ve seen there and clearly not the last. This is a continuous issue among others at Aquarium City.”
