Tucked into Brea, California, Happy Fish Pets is a small, family-owned shop that punches above its weight with a carefully curated selection of freshwater and saltwater fish, live plants, and corals. Owned and operated by what appears to be a husband-and-wife team, the store has built a loyal following among local hobbyists who appreciate its clean tanks, healthy livestock, and genuinely affordable pricing. The shop may be compact, but reviewers consistently note the quality over quantity approach.
Tanks are well-maintained, and the fish look healthy and vibrant — something that matters far more than sheer volume of stock. One customer came specifically looking for a foxface rabbitfish and found multiple specimens to choose from, a testament to the store's willingness to stock saltwater species that go beyond the usual clownfish-and-damsel fare. Regulars praise the store for carrying unique, one-of-a-kind fish that bigger chain stores simply don't offer.
Beyond livestock, Happy Fish Pets stocks aquarium essentials — tanks, pumps, heaters, and other equipment — along with live plants that plant enthusiasts have specifically called out as a reason to visit. The pricing across the board draws compliments; multiple reviewers describe the deals as genuinely great rather than just competitive. The husband in particular gets singled out as accommodating and knowledgeable, greeting customers warmly and taking time to share information about fish care.
The pride the owners take in their aquariums is visible the moment you walk in — sparkling clean setups that reflect a genuine passion for the hobby rather than just a business operation. For Brea-area fishkeepers, Happy Fish Pets offers something increasingly rare: a neighborhood fish store where the owners know their stock, keep their tanks immaculate, and price things fairly. It's the kind of local shop that thrives on repeat visits and word of mouth, and it deserves both.

I’ve been here a few times and they are always so sweet. I’m assuming it’s the husband and wife owners I’ve met. Always a fan of supporting local, small businesses ❤️

Came at 12:00 on a Tuesday during its hours of operation and no one was here. This is the second or third time I've done this. They are not opened when they say they're going to be and I will not be coming back.

Very nice and helpful people who greet you when you walk in. They have a good selection of fish tank necessities, some tanks, pumps, heaters, etc., and fish selection is decent for the size of the store maybe leaning towards the minimal of choices. That could be because fish places like these are very hard to keep afloat and are a dying breed and that is why if your reading this, I want to encourage you to support your local fish shops so that they stay open and supply our fisheries. Let's not let what happened to Discount Tropical Fish happen to anyone else.

I bought fish there at least a dozen times in the beginning the lady that works there was nice but then I noticed when I was buying just one two three fish at a time it seems like she was looking down on me and had attitude every time I came in. Her husband on the other seems to be a great guy and very accommodating I expect when I go into an establishment like this whether you buy one fish for $4 or you buy 20 fish for $100 the treatment should be the same I have decided to no longer shop there and go to Anaheim to a place called The reef where they treat me with respect and have far more knowledge whether I buy one fish or 10 as it should be. FYI this is my experience I don't know about others.

Was denied entrance with my Medical Alert SERVICE DOG. Will be reporting the shop to the ADA. The woman just kept yelling "No Dog" even after I explained my service dog three times. She did not bother to ask the two questions "is this a service dog" and "what service does it perform". Don't shop here, especially if you are disabled and need your service dog with you. Discriminated against 100%
