About

Kona Reef AZ has earned a reputation as one of the most polished aquarium stores in Phoenix, AZ, and the moment you step through the door you understand why: spotless tanks, prices listed menu-style with no guesswork, and creative displays that feel more like a curated exhibit than a retail floor. 8-star average across more than 700 reviews, this Phoenix shop has built a loyal following among Valley reef keepers and freshwater hobbyists alike. The saltwater side is the headliner.

Kona Reef is known for its wide variety of clownfish for sale in Phoenix, AZ, alongside vibrant coral frags and healthy reef livestock that staff will happily walk you through tank by tank. Freshwater keepers are just as well served, with lush live plants, Java moss, planted-tank supplies, and invertebrates like pumpkin shrimp and assassin snails available in Phoenix, AZ. Dry goods round things out — filter socks, salt mixes, chemicals, gravel, fish food, HOB filters with UV sterilization, and CO2 kits for aquascapers dialing in their first scape.

What customers return for, again and again, is the staff. Hunter is something of a local legend for his patience with beginners and younger hobbyists, and manager Conner, Emily, and Dylan draw the same praise. The freshest reviews single out Ethan, one of the newest team members, who recently talked one visitor into a coral frag and freshwater plants when she came in just for brine shrimp.

Owner Mike earns credit for fair, no-pressure service, too. If you're hunting for saltwater fish, coral, or planted-tank gear near me in the Phoenix area, Kona Reef AZ rewards the in-person trip with honest guidance and livestock that arrives home healthy. It's the kind of aquarium store that can turn a quick stop for snails into a long conversation about your next build.

  • “We were in yesterday just for some brine shrimp but Ethan was so knowledgeable and helpful that we ended up getting a coral frag and some freshwater plants. Thanks again for your help Ethan! We live in Mesa and will still drive to the Phx location because the tanks are always so clean and staff so helpful.”

  • “Darrin & Ethan really helped out in preparing me for my purchase. Very knowledgeable, personable and understood how to help me (someone who knows NOTHING about fish/tanks) - they were very patient with me and just a general thankyou again for the great customer service”

  • “This store is great, we have been with them since we got our saltwater aquarium 3.5 years ago. They always go out of their way to be helpful and informative. Their owner, Mike, was very fair with us when we needed to make a return. We appreciated that so much and have remained loyal customers as a result. We have had challenges in putting certain fish together, and they always advise us in making these decisions. Also, it’s obvious they really care about what they do. Connor has been especially accommodating with our needs and requests. As another example, while I was in their store this week, trying to decide on the next fish to add to our tank, one of their newest staff, Ethan, spent a lot of time with me, making sure my questions were answered and helping me finalize my purchase. It was a great experience, I even ended up buying an extra fish I wasn’t planning due to how helpful he was. Thanks guys, you’re the best!”

  • “What a wonderful fish store! Stopped in for an assassin snail to help with my bladder snail and left with a lot of beneficial information to keep my aquarium thriving. Hunter was thorough and definitely a professional at what he does! I will definitely be back.”

  • “Here’s a polished version that keeps your tone but flows a bit more smoothly: > As someone new to the aquarium world, the whole process can feel overwhelming—but this store makes it so much easier. They offer incredible expertise, guidance, and resources. Hunter and Emily were both knowledgeable, kind, and refreshingly honest. It’s clear they genuinely care about doing what’s best for your aquarium while also helping you save money. Highly recommend”

  • “I bought over $140 worth of products and fish on Wednesday, including three angelfish and some small catfish, among others. They were very timid and not eating. My tank is clean, and I test the water with strips a few times a week. Everything looks fine. Early this morning (Thursday), I found one of the angelfish dead. By around 3 PM, another one had died. I paid $13.99 each for them. One fish is still doing well, and I called to inform them. That's $30 out of pocket wasted. I wanted to let them know in case they had a new breeder or some change. They didn’t offer anything in return. There was an awkward silence until I said, "OK, thank you, goodbye." It's understandable if I had the new fish a week or even three days, but these died in less than 24 hours. To make matters worse, one of the plants I bought is missing its anchor and is floating around. Now I have to find something to fix this problem. I’m not taking responsibility for the dead fish, as my other fish are doing fine. I won’t be going back to Kona Reef.”

  • “Hunter and Emily were awesome. They were super patient with us and my kiddo! Hunter is incredibly knowledge and is the reason we stuck with our new fresh water tank. Thanks Hunter and team (the manager Conner is also so helpful!)”
