About

Reef Life Aquariums has carved out a loyal following in Birmingham, Alabama, drawing fishkeepers from 45 minutes away or more to browse its clean, well-organized tanks. Owner Mike is the driving force behind the shop, bringing decades of expertise to conversations about reef compatibility, planted tank builds, and freshwater stocking. Multiple reviewers credit him with saving their tanks from disaster by steering them away from incompatible livestock or impulsive purchases.

The store stocks a genuinely diverse range of freshwater and saltwater fish, from mollies and cory cats to cichlids and vibrant reef fish. The coral selection draws particular praise from saltwater hobbyists, alongside healthy invertebrates like cherry shrimp, ghost shrimp, and multiple varieties of nerite snails. Live aquatic plants are sold in generous, healthy portions—a detail that matters to planted tank enthusiasts tired of receiving half-dead stems from big-box stores.

Reef Life also mixes quality RO/DI saltwater on-site, giving reef keepers a reliable local source they can trust. Beyond livestock, the shop carries a solid range of dry goods—filters, foods, chemicals, medications, and equipment for setting up new aquariums. Their website mirrors in-store inventory accurately and supports easy online ordering, with the option to special-order fish not currently listed.

Staff will walk newcomers through the entire process of cycling a tank and choosing compatible species, and they're known for being upfront about what you actually need versus what you could skip. The livestock quality is a recurring theme in reviews. Customers who previously lost fish purchased from big-box pet stores report dramatically better survival rates with Reef Life's stock.

Tanks are not overcrowded, and the animals visibly look healthy and cared for. The store occasionally hosts a charming black-and-white shop dog, which has become a fan favorite. For Birmingham's aquarium community, Reef Life fills a gap that few local shops can match—a place where the fish come first and the advice comes free.

  • “Great selection of quality aquarium goods, fish, and corals. Helpful staff too.”

  • “My experience with them is great! They speak when you come in, thy ask if you need anything or say let me know when you need something. So there’s time to truly look. Also , the fish I’ve gotten from there have been superb. I’ve bought from pets smart and petco, to come home within a day or two fish have passed, I’ll go in those stores to look and usually you can find a sick ,dying , or deceased fish . NOT at Reeflife. They care. My fish from them are healthy. they don’t overload tanks like other previous pet stores mention do. 💕💕”

  • “Great Owner, don't belive the negative reviews. I'm an hour away from the store and only went there because he could get the tank I was looking for and at a very reasonable price. But I looked around while there at his supplies and fish and talked to him. He clearly knows this field extremely well. I have been keeping fish since 1976, so between you and me, that's saying something.”

  • “I love the store but it was one young lady that worked in there that was very rude. I’m not spending my money here again.”

  • “I purchased several freshwater fish, cherry shrimp, and live aquatic plants about a week ago, and they are all doing wonderful! The staff was very helpful and attentive despite the store being quite busy. I will absolutely be returning for more aquarium supplies!”

  • “Phenomenal store! The best aquarium store I've been to in the area. Wide selection of healthy fish with very helpful staff”

  • “I have made the trek to shop here multiple times now (45+m ride). The store has been consistently clean, neat, and inviting. The plants, fish, snails, and shrimp, as well as the tanks, look healthy, and cared for. To date, I have purchased Mollies, Cory cats, 3 types of Nerite snails, 15+ Ghost shrimp, and multiples of 4 types of plants. Of course food, filters, and chemicals too. I will be going again next week. A newly cycled tank will be ready for residents. The staff are great. I have been there when the store was crowded, as well as when I was the crowd. The same courteous and friendly atmosphere. Have a question? Ask your question and receive an answer.”
