Wild Habitats in Appleton, Wisconsin has built a loyal following on the strength of one thing above all: genuine care — for animals, customers, and the craft of keeping them both happy. This independently owned fish and reptile shop has earned its stellar reputation through hands-on expertise and a willingness to spend real time with every person who walks through the door. The freshwater fish selection is healthy and well-maintained, with clean tanks housing angelfish, bettas, platies, plecos, and more.
Customers consistently note the difference from chain stores — no floaters, no neglected tanks. The live aquatic plants are another draw, with staff ready to walk you through what will actually work in your specific setup rather than just pointing you toward a shelf. Brady, who multiple reviewers mention by name, is the heart of the operation.
He's the kind of shopkeeper who remembers your animals, your setup, and your last purchase. One customer brought in a pleco that had outgrown their tank, and rather than judgment, they got help rehoming the fish — no shame, just solutions. That kind of approach builds the trust that keeps people coming back for years.
While Wild Habitats isn't exclusively a fish store — they carry reptiles, feeder insects, and related supplies — the aquarium side holds its own with a solid selection of freshwater species, aquatic plants, and aquarium décor. The feeder insects, particularly crickets and hornworms, are gut-loaded on leafy greens and priced competitively, which matters for the reptile keepers who cross over into this space. The store is compact but well-curated, and the atmosphere is warm enough that customers report dropping by just to browse and chat.
For freshwater hobbyists in the Fox Valley area looking for a shop that treats fish keeping as a relationship rather than a transaction, Wild Habitats delivers.

Good selection for the size, on the pricer side but had a good amount of aquarium decor and plants.

I love wild habitat's! I originally found this fish and reptile store from a recommendation my exotic vet gave me on my sick beardie. She recommended their feeders and Brady as essentially a informational source. So ofcourse I checked it out . This was about 2 or 3 yrs ago now. And I still LOVE this store for different reasons . Brady is amazing, when it comes to his customer service he was just built to work with reptile people. He is compassionate and knowledgeable! Always willing to answer any questions you have and will not rush threw ever even when the store is busy! He might need to help check some people out but will make time for you.At one point this new girl gave me some dead bsfl instead of tell me they didn't have as many as I wanted.funny thing she went to wild habitats from just pets 🧐. Actually didn't see her after that lol. BUT Next visit I let Brady know he was quick to tell me next time I get bugs he'd give a free dozen of bsfl, I just kept forgetting also I buy from here A LOT soo he knew I wasn't lieing so don't be cheap! , however he really wants his customers to be happy and goes out of his way to make sure. The feeders ! Even the crickets are fed leafy greens. And the prices are better then most places especially when you look at the care of the bugs. I don't feel the need to hold bugs for 3 days to gut load ! When I need to feed my dragons I feel safe feeding wild habitat's bugs on the spot! I've been going here pretty much since they opened . P.s Brady is you see this apparently I do not know how to keep crickets alive and they scare me lol a good portion of them died. It smelled really bad ! 😂 . I don't think a coffee container and a plastic bag lid with holes was it either. Well stick to the other buggies lol yes I'm also still afraid of dubia too lol.

They are SO unbelievably kind. I was getting sick of PetSmart and Petco for my fish needs. They aren’t approachable, and never give you the time of day. I came here originally wanting some live plants and did not know much of what would go best, Brady helped me immediately and gave me the education I needed. I was able to rehome my pleco to them for their bond when he outgrew my tank. I appreciated not being shamed for getting a fish out of my league and helping me find better care for the fish. I went back again today because my platies are having some issues and they were kind to sit with me, give advice, and welcome me. So nice to feel like you are a part of the crew when you walk in! I appreciate how kind and positive they are, for the way they treat their Betas specifically and other fish (never see any dead like the chain stores), and that they haven’t judged me for my many silly questions! Im sure ill go back frequently regardless of needing things just to enjoy the atmosphere and look around!
