About Splashy Fish

Tucked in a strip mall across from Sky Zone in Springfield, Virginia, Splashy Fish has built a devoted following across the Northern Virginia region and well beyond — customers regularly make the drive from Baltimore and Richmond. The store traces its roots to a family fish farm in Vietnam, and that heritage shows in the quality and depth of its freshwater livestock. Walk in and you'll find a dedicated betta room with an unbelievable selection, a separate shrimp room that draws hobbyists from across the mid-Atlantic, and tanks filled with healthy nano fish like Ember Tetras, corydoras, guppies, and hard-to-find species that remind old-school fishkeepers of the wild-caught stores of decades past.

The plant selection features Tropica tissue cultures alongside a range of aquatic plants, though some reviewers note occasional melt on certain crypts and the possibility of hitchhiker snails. Hardscape options include dragon stone and river rock, and the display tanks throughout the shop are beautifully aquascaped — the kind you linger over for inspiration. The store also stocks brine shrimp and live foods, a genuine rarity among local fish stores.

What sets Splashy Fish apart is the team. Staff members like Alan, Britton (a marine biologist), Nick, Nguyen, and Sam are frequently called out by name in reviews. They walk customers through tank cycling step by step, help select the healthiest specimens, and follow up over the phone when issues arise.

Owner Nguyen is described as a seasoned aquascaper whose philosophy — only stocking products he'd use in his own tanks — filters down to every recommendation the staff makes. Several team members hold or are pursuing degrees in environmental sciences and ecology. The shop quarantines and feeds fish thoroughly before sale, and the livestock health reflects it: customers consistently report fish coloring up quickly and thriving after acclimation.

Prices run slightly above chain stores, but the quality justifies the cost. Weekday visits are recommended to avoid Saturday crowds in the compact space. For freshwater fishkeeping in NOVA, this is the store people keep coming back to.

It looks how you'd hope a modern aquatics store would look, with scaped displays and certain brands on hand in aquatics products, though I will say I was surprised they didn't carry pacific driftwood in their hardscape section. The fish and shrimp I did get are all healthy and happy, and I got a few nice pieces of river stone along with some plants, though the crypt had more holes in the leaves than I'd like. Editing from my previous review and giving an extra star: The service members really do try their best and seem to like what they do, I received some above and beyond help over the phone after some unfortunate luck with my fish post drip acclimation for breeds they didn't have in stock or carry atm. I will still say Saturday for sure is not the best day to visit, it's a small shop and the service staff are juggling a lot between helping multiple and taking care of tanks etc, so if you can help it, visit on a week day.

These guys have a great variety of fish. Its a little bit more pricy for the fish but there better quality so its worth it. Plants i wouldn't buy, they just need some love and look bad and melted. The display takings though plants are beautiful. Also, the plants have alot of snails, not a bad thing but just be aware for your tank when you take any home. Service, there's a few great staff members but, there's a few that are just over whelmed or are sociably awkward. Its fine, but just say high or ill be right with you. Example it took like 20 minutes to even be acknowledged. I get your busy but just let me know you know im here and waiting. Owners a great guy, very knowledgeable, staff is super knowledgeable too. Ill keep coming back though. Love the place.

My wife took me on a surprise trip here all the way from Baltimore. It was well worth the drive. Great fish selection, good rock and wood selection a whole room dedicated to betta and best of all a shrimp room.

This is by far the best local fish store in NOVA (I’ve tirelessly checked out every single one within an hours drive from me, they all have their own strengths, but this location really shines). The owner is very professional and a seasoned aquascaper and fish keeper. The staff he keeps is also very educated, both having or pursuing degrees in environmental sciences, ecology, or related fields. I swing by this store even if I’m remotely close by just to check it out, beautiful display tanks, healthy fish, great selections of fish, plants (tropica!!!), hardscape selections, shrimp, and amazing products. They only stock items that they would use in their own homes and their recommendations have never had my tanks performing better. Come shop here, take their advice, and you will not be disappointed. Lastly, outside of the other qualifications they are very polite and friendly, with customers, each other, and to their livestock!

Didn't feel like doing my own research on chemistry before starting my own planted aquarium- so I decided to come here in hopes of learning from the experts! I was helped by Britain, a super helpful marine biologist who explained everything to me and helped me pick out the exactly what I needed and how to cycle my tank step by step. This place has everything you need and more! Definitely the place you need to go if youre looking for freshwater supplies and fish! Just heads up, this place is kinda hard to find. There's a small road sign pointing to the correct row of shops. Its on the same side as the scuba place all the way at the end.

Growing up, my father was a Marine biologist in southern Florida. He always had at least 200 tanks of wild specimens that he caught himself in the 80s and 90s ichthyology and Ichthyosauria was on every wall. Later his work at the ichthyology labs in Colorado, the famous livebearer eden exhibit at Staten Island zoo. The Baltimore Aquarium. A come to life in a portal at Splashy Fish. A fish nerd and snob since birth now 5O years old. Splashy Fish and staff is a gem. Rare and healthy and hard to find fish is going the way of the Dodo.🦤. Not! Splashy Fish a family fish farm from Vietnam 🇻🇳 to a zoological shrine as a aquarium and fish store in Burke is crazy. After my first visit I ran home to build a rack for four large tanks. Every time I return I see older men fish nerds time travel to the books of Dr. Axelrod and the closest thing to the wild caught stores of lore. Family fish stores like a few a support them when i can. Of every freshwater fish store from Annapolis to Richmond do yourself and your aquariums a service stop by Splashy Fish. Better prices and selection of quality livestock and live foods a rarity these days. Convenient to 95 Sorry competition Congressional Centerville Vienna Splashy Fish is a fish enthusiast sanctuary & social space 🐟🐠 💯
