The Reef Room LLC in Newport News, Virginia is exactly what its name promises — a dedicated saltwater shop that has carved out a loyal following on the Virginia Peninsula by going all-in on reef keeping. Owned and operated by Dale (alongside his son Seth and wife), this small but densely stocked store specializes in corals, marine fish, and full saltwater setups. Multiple reviewers call it the best coral and saltwater fish store on the peninsula, and the demand apparently backs that up — fish often sell out shortly after arriving, a testament to the health and quality of the livestock.
The coral selection is a clear draw. Reviewers mention unique coral pieces that are hard to find locally, including impressive frags and massive display colonies. One visitor highlighted a stunning goldbar maroon clownfish that caught their eye.
The store also carries saltwater aquarium equipment and supplies, and Dale's team is known for helping customers build complete marine setups from scratch — tanks, filtration, and everything needed to get running. Several customers credit Dale and Seth with getting their entire aquarium systems established in just days. Don't expect freshwater anything here.
The Reef Room is exclusively saltwater, which allows the team to focus their considerable expertise. That knowledge is the store's other major asset. Reviewers consistently praise the in-depth guidance they receive, from cycle management to livestock compatibility.
One customer who had only kept freshwater tanks said the staff gave them the confidence to finally make the switch to a reef setup. The store itself is compact — the parking lot is tight and the retail space is modest — but what's inside punches well above its weight class. If you're looking for coral frags, marine fish, or a knowledgeable team to help you plan a saltwater build in the Hampton Roads area, The Reef Room delivers focused expertise and healthy livestock that keeps customers coming back.
Just be prepared: frag prices aren't always posted, so don't hesitate to ask.

Their team is a great help. We shopped around and they are the best price for saltwater set ups in the area minus tanks. Their knowledge is immense with the stuff and we will be repeat customers.

Where do I start. I was the only person in the store and walked around a couple times looking at the reef tanks and person in there never acknowledged me. Store was dirty and aquarium equipment was not well maintenance. I always try to buy local but this store will never get my business.
