Tucked inside Lynchburg's River Ridge Mall, Hill City AquaZoo isn't a traditional fish store — it's an interactive indoor zoo and aquarium that brings marine and terrestrial life together under one roof. Visitors walk through exhibits featuring saltwater sharks and stingrays alongside freshwater species like koi and axolotls, plus a menagerie of land animals including capybaras, wallabies, porcupines, iguanas, and otters. One reviewer described the experience of sitting inside the saltwater aquarium exhibit "without getting wet," a testament to the immersive design the facility has built within its mall footprint.
What sets AquaZoo apart is its hands-on approach. Using a token system, guests can feed stingrays, pet capybaras, and interact directly with animals at staffed encounter stations. The koi pond draws attention — though at least one visitor noted it appeared overcrowded — and the axolotls and large tortoises roaming freely are consistent crowd favorites.
A walk-in bird cage with macaws rounds out the experience. Staff members earn near-universal praise. Reviewers single out employees by name — Sam, who bonded with a child over Wild Kratts; Cam, who turned a snake-phobic visitor into a reptile appreciator; Christine, who demonstrated deep knowledge of animal behavior and diet.
Multiple reviewers with veterinary or biology backgrounds noted that the animals appeared healthy, unstressed, and well-cared-for, with species-appropriate diets of fresh fruits and vegetables visibly prepared. The facility even keeps noise-cancelling headphones on hand for sensory-sensitive children. Pricing is the most common criticism.
Admission plus tokens can run $80 or more for a small family, and some visitors report inconsistent staffing at interactive stations. The entire experience typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. For families in the Lynchburg area, the annual membership is widely recommended as the best value — regular visitors describe weekly trips with toddlers who never tire of it.
It's a genuinely educational, climate-controlled destination that brings conservation awareness to central Virginia in an unexpectedly engaging mall setting.

Our family has an annual membership to Aqua Zoo, it's one of the best purchases we have ever made! Staff is always so friendly during our weekly visits and our family loves to watch and interact with the animals.

We enjoyed our visit but probably won't go back. Its a very clean zoo/aquarium and the animals seem well cared for. In addition to tickets, you have to purchase tokens to visit animals - for example, 3 tokens per person to pet the capybaras. We paid $35 for 20 tokens plus approx $60 for 3 of us to enter. It wasn't incredibly busy but I didn't find the staff very attentive to the posted times or stations. My two-year-old enjoyed it and we got to pet and feed lots of animals. We went through in about 90 minutes.

Went for my son’s birthday and had a great experience! All staff was wonderful, very kind helpful and knowledgeable. Especially Sam who recognized my son’s Wild Kratts vest and shared his love for the show and animals with him! He took the time to make sure my boy had a special day and got to see the animals up close and explained them to him. He’s been talking about his friend Sam all day!

Not sure why this place has a 4.5 rating. I’ve visited multiple times and have since decided I won’t be returning. You pay for your tickets and then you pay for tokens separately. I spent at least 80$ for two people, one of them being my 5yo. Yes there are interactive stations but every time I’ve gone no one is at their station!! There’s a poster saying what time they’ll be back but when the time comes, you’ll still be waiting.. and they might never show up. You’re lucky if you spend an hour there and get to go into the bird cage. Speaking of bird cage..the macaws sure don’t look happy. Perched under a light with very little space for two birds to share. Otters are never in their home.. have yet to see them. Coi pond is overcrowded. I’m only giving two stars because my kid did love looking at the few animals that were available to see and whoever takes your money at the front desk is always nice…the enclosures have always looked very clean too. However, I don’t think I’ll ever be back here…it’s more for people visiting Lynchburg who have money to waste and time to spend. If you’re local and looking for something to do with the kids, you’re better off driving to DC or NC for one of those zoos. Same price..if not cheaper, way better experience.

Fun and interactive, my son loved talking to the kid that worked there about the big turtle.
