Tropical Exotics in Dale City, Virginia is a relatively new shop that's already making a strong impression across the DMV aquarium community. Occupying the former Nova Tropicals location, the store has quickly built a reputation for an outstanding coral selection—one reviewer declared they'd never seen anything like it—alongside deep freshwater and saltwater inventories that include genuinely hard-to-find species. At one point, they even stocked a freshwater moray eel.
The saltwater section is clearly a passion project, with vibrant, active corals drawing hobbyists from as far as Maryland. But freshwater gets equal respect here. African cichlids fill dedicated tanks, cardinal tetras leave healthy and thriving, and the live plant selection is robust enough that one customer finally tracked down a species they'd been hunting for across multiple stores.
Notably, Tropical Exotics is the only partner store for Aquarium Co-Op in the DMV area, carrying their products alongside a broad range of tanks and equipment available to order. What truly sets this shop apart is the livestock care. Bettas swim in proper filtered and cycled tanks—no cups in sight—and the shrimp, including Sakura, look vibrant and healthy.
Staff actively quarantine tanks at the first sign of cloudy water rather than waiting for visible illness, a level of preventative husbandry that experienced hobbyists will immediately appreciate. The team—Sam, Shane, Seth, and others—are consistently praised for their depth of knowledge and genuine investment in customer success. They'll talk you through the realities of keeping aggressive or large species, even if it means losing a sale.
For newcomers setting up their first saltwater system, Shane has walked couples through every step of the process, from equipment selection to future planning. With healthy livestock, knowledgeable staff who prioritize animal welfare, and an inventory that spans corals to cichlids to reptiles, Tropical Exotics is quickly becoming a go-to destination for aquarists across Northern Virginia and beyond.

Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. The saltwater section is clearly the focus and is awesome, but they still have a solid freshwater selection. Even bettas in real tanks not cups!

My partner and I came out here for some lizard supplies and also to check out the fish. The store is stocked with basically everything you could need and the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Best of all, all their bettas were in proper filtered and cycled tanks and all looked extremely healthy :)

Customer service is not there. Fish are being sold sick. Called today and no mention that there is early closing.

Very nice fish store with a huge selection of saltwater, freshwater, and African cichlid fish. I have never seen a coral selection like this place has. Good prices on tanks too, they can order whatever you want. Helpful staff. Good selection of aquatic plants as well.

Extremely impressive location with a lot of niche, difficult to find fish. Staff are clearly very knowledgable about their livestock and take a lot of care to make sure you make an educated purchase, they’re willing to risk losing a sale if it means making sure someone knows what they’re getting into with a possibly difficult/aggressive/large species. A lot of attention seems to be put into preventing sick livestock. I overheard one of the tanks being put into quarantine because the water was cloudy. Honestly staff at a lot of aquarium stores I frequent don’t seem to even know the downsides of cloudy water, beyond being an aesthetic issue. Seeing staff here display an understanding of how fish get sick + preventative care/quarantining instead of care/quarantine *after* fish are visibly sick (if at all) is very refreshing. Original review was some disappointment about poorly communicated last minute changes in closing times when I first tried to visit a while back. Could not care less about that after visiting today.

Thanks to the Tropical Exotics team! Sam, Seth, Shane (I forgot a few, sorry!). I initially came out here from MD b/c it is the only location in the DMV that is a partner store for Aquarium Co-Op (has some of their products). But Sam’s knowledge, humor, and understanding made it a great experience. Everyone was great, kind, helpful. Beautiful, active coral! Their shrimp look healthy and vibrant, so I left with a few Sakura!

I’d been searching everywhere for a specific plant for my aquarium with no luck—until a quick search for nearby aquarium stores led me to Tropical Aquatics, just a few minutes from home. I stopped in for the first time today and wow! The store is beautiful, and they had the plant I’d been hunting for (and plenty of others). The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly cares for every creature and plant in their care. Everything looked clean, healthy and well-tended. I’ll absolutely be returning. My Betta, Earl Pierre, likes the finer things, and this is officially my go-to for him! He’s already enjoying his new plants and his new snail companion, whom we’ve named Gary. Thank you, Tropical Aquatics, for making both Earl Pierre and me very happy!
