About
Tropical Exotics is an independent aquarium store in Dale City, VA, set up in the former Nova Tropicals space and run by a hands-on team that locals have come to know by name. Walk in and the first thing regulars mention is the coral: hobbyists drive over from Maryland and across the DMV for a high-end coral selection that more than one customer says they have never seen matched anywhere else. Saltwater is clearly the passion here, but the freshwater side holds its own, with a huge variety of freshwater fish for sale in Dale City, VA, from African cichlids in dedicated tanks to cardinal tetras and angelfish.
The shop is also the only Aquarium Co-Op partner store in the DMV, carrying their products alongside tanks and equipment the team can order in for almost any project. Plant keepers do well here too, with a live plant selection deep enough that shoppers who had struck out everywhere else finally found the species they were hunting. Searching for invertebrates near me?
Recent visitors have walked out with healthy nerite snails and vibrant Sakura shrimp, and the bettas swim in proper filtered, cycled tanks rather than cups. What sets the place apart is how the staff talk to you. Vee has walked angelfish keepers through proper care, Shane guides first-time saltwater couples from equipment selection to long-term planning, and Sam is the name that comes up again and again for patient, genuinely helpful conversation.
They will level with you about aggressive or large species even if it costs them a sale, and they back livestock with a 7-day guarantee. There is a well-stocked reptile section too, so families often linger. For anyone in Northern Virginia searching for corals, cichlids, or rare freshwater fish for sale, Tropical Exotics is a browse-for-hours kind of aquarium store worth the trip in person.

— nicole andino5.02 weeks ago“I was excited when Tropical Exotics opened after Nova Tropicals closed, as it’s great to have a local fish store nearby. I genuinely wanted this shop to succeed and become my go-to LFS. Unfortunately, my experience with livestock has been disappointing. In April, I purchased cardinal tetras and otocinclus. While I experienced losses with the otos, I initially attributed that to the species’ reputation for being sensitive and moved on. A few weeks later, I purchased six Julii Corydoras. Within 48 hours, only one remained alive. I contacted the store because my aquarium has been established since August 2024 and consistently tests at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10–20 nitrate, and a pH around 7. I wanted to make them aware of a potential issue with the batch and inquire about the guarantee that had been referenced in other reviews. When I spoke with Kathy, she indicated she had not noticed any unusual losses from that group but said she would keep an eye on the remaining fish and asked me to check back in about a week. She indicated she would help me out if there appeared to be an issue with the batch. When I returned the following week, I was told that only three fish from that same group remained. I was also told that a former employee may have improperly bagged the fish. Kathy offered me those remaining three corydoras at a 15% discount, which I accepted in good faith despite that not being what I’d consider a “livestock guarantee”, hoping the original losses had been an isolated issue. Unfortunately, within 48 hours, two of those three fish had also died. While fish losses can happen in this hobby, I found it concerning that 7 of the 9 Julii Corydoras I purchased from the same batch died within 48 hours despite stable water parameters in a mature aquarium established since August 2024. Given the repeated losses from the same shipment, I was left questioning the overall health and condition of the fish being sold. The only reason I am not leaving a lower rating is because the store was willing to hold a betta for me while I cycled another tank, and that fish has been doing well. However, after repeated losses across multiple purchases, I no longer feel confident purchasing livestock here.”

— Mack Rhoades5.0a month ago“Terrible. 1. Store says they were opening up at 1100. Didnt open up till 1115. Okay. Traffic is crazy here so it is what it is. 2. Did greet me and my wife when we walked in. That was about it. Felt extremely unwelcomed there. Kept staring at my wife and I lile we were there to steal things. Not knowing I just bought a 36 gallon tank that I was looking to buy a lot of plants for. 3. If you own a business you would think you would atleast interact with the customer. Felt like I was burdening them and then on top of all that I didn't even know who to talk to if I wanted to buy things. I don't know if people were having a bad day or not, but this was unacceptable. I really starting to get in the hobby and I was looking forward to going to a store other than a big box brand. I would steer clear of this place.”

— Phillip Hammond5.03 months ago“Highly recommend Tropical Exotics. Staff is highly knowledgeable and helpful. Vee specifically has helped answer many of my questions regarding how to properly care for my angel fishes. The staff in general felt very welcoming overall and the inventory they had on the floor was amazing and I could spend hours looking at the various fishes, corals, etc.”
