About
Set inside a converted historic home on Ashland, Virginia's main street, with a small bed-and-breakfast tucked upstairs, Fin & Feather is the independent fish store locals drive in for from as far as Richmond. Owner Mark and his crew, including Ethan, who regularly earns thanks for his patience, have packed every room with an impressive density of livestock, plants, and hard-to-find stock that punches well above the building's footprint. The freshwater section is the heart of it.
Shoppers consistently call out a better variety than any chain in the area, "cool fish you don't find just anywhere," and the bettas draw special praise for looking bright and healthy. If you're hunting for bettas, cichlids, or uncommon community fish for sale in Ashland, VA, this is the tank wall to browse, and recent visitors mention leaving with healthy fish plus a new plant for the tank. Live plants fill the displays alongside a genuinely good selection of rock and driftwood at fair prices, giving aquascapers real options.
Cichlid keepers get hands-on help dialing in a tank, and the staff will walk you through the full nitrogen cycle before selling you an axolotl, happy to talk through compatibility and water chemistry without rushing you out the door. Beyond the aquariums, Fin & Feather is a true one-stop independent pet store: crickets and supplies for leopard geckos, snake feeders, and food for dogs, cats, birds, and reptiles. Prices stay reasonable and the advice is genuinely expert, which is why so many regulars make it a standing weekend stop.
The space is tight, so skip the big group, but every square foot is curated and the atmosphere is personal and unhurried. This is the shop whose owner once closed up to run home for a dog carrier when a stranded Amtrak traveler needed one. If you're anywhere near Ashland, the fish, plants, and hard-won know-how here are well worth the visit.

— Robert Smith4.03 months ago“This will be the only place I shop for my leopard gecko going forward!! I used to only shop at PetSmart for crickets for my gecko and they switched and my gecko barely ate and got depressed and aggravated (hangry). So I’ve been searching for a new place I called Finn and feather for really good information on crickets for her and went to buy some. I LOOOVEE how much they have to offer in their store! So much stuff such great prices! They’re friendly and informative! My gecko ate them all up and she’s back to being happy walking around her tank I even got cork board for her there. Absolutely love this place!! Picture of my happy girl ☺️”
