## About

Pet City Houston is a long-running, family-owned pet shop on Houston's retail landscape that has built a loyal following over nearly two decades — some customers report 17-plus years of patronage. While it's a general pet store carrying dogs, birds, reptiles, gerbils, chinchillas, hedgehogs, and feeder rats, the fish section earns repeated mention and recent investment. The store has remodeled its aquarium area, and reviewers describe a striking diversity of both saltwater and freshwater fish, including rare and exotic species that draw hobbyists in for a closer look. Staff members note that the fish are healthy, affordable, and well-maintained, with at least one employee recognized for deep knowledge of the aquatic inventory.

The reptile selection is notable too — snakes, chameleons, crested geckos, and turtles line the walls, alongside the supplies needed to house them. One customer with a 26-year-old ball python named Jake specifically trusts Pet City's feeder rats for quality and cleanliness, a testament to the store's standards for live animal care.

Cleanliness is a recurring theme across reviews. Multiple visitors remark that the store lacks the typical pet shop odor, and the animals appear well-kept and content. Employee Lex gets called out by name for her warmth and encyclopedic knowledge of individual animals' personalities, making the selection process feel personal rather than transactional.

The store stocks a broad range of supplies — enclosures, food, and care essentials — so customers can walk out with a new pet and everything needed to set up at home. Prices are generally considered fair, and the variety punches above what you might expect from its modest footprint. That said, some reviewers have flagged inconsistent customer service and concerns about puppy sourcing through third-party breeders.

For Houston fish keepers browsing the freshwater and saltwater tanks, Pet City offers a colorful and affordable inventory worth the visit, especially if the recently renovated aquarium section continues to expand.

> I bought Toasty in October 2025. Toasty is the second dog I purchased from Pet City. The first was a Maltese over 12 years ago. I had no issues both times. Toasty is strong and healthy. He weighs 51 pounds at roughly 9 months. It didn’t take long to crate train him and socialize him with my other pet. He even found another Husky to play with. Satisfied and loyal customer.

> This place was an awesome find. They have everything for everything. Reptiles: snakes, chameleons, geckos, turtles, etc. Beautiful an exotic rare saltwater and freshwater fish, an exciting diversity. All kinds of birds and dogs.

They have everything you need to set up, feed, and take care of the animals. All workers are knowledgeable in their field in the store. Very good prices in my opinion.

> We purchased a beautiful crested gecko from this location. We were assured health and help understanding what we need to take proper care of it. We got there and inquired about breeding conditions and they wouldn’t answer, we asked for help for enclosure supplies and he pointed me to the wall where supplies were, offering no help.

We did our own research to ensure we were doing all correct only for it to die 3 weeks later. Two heartbroken boys who don’t understand. Knowledgeable and helpful employees are essential. Do not recommend.

> The girl with tattoos was very sweet and very friendly and I LOVE my new puppy. This poor rating is more so about the conditions they kept the puppy(s) in. I was not planning on adding another dog to my family, but when I saw this singular puppy inside of its glass prison all alone, I had to meet him. Instant connection, and the sweet girl told me he had been at the pet store since september. It is the end of December! I understand the store works with 3rd party breeders, but if the owners really cared about animals, how could they willingly and knowingly keep a dog in a tiny glass kennel for that long? After hearing about his entrapment, I did everything I could to convince my husband for the funds to bail the puppy out. I made offers and the 3rd parter breeder still had the audacity to rebuttal with higher than what I offered even though the dog had been at the pet store for months. The pet store should not do business with people like that. My dog is grateful to have a new life of freedom, but it just breaks my heart and makes me so angry that people will put their greed before an animal's well being. I'm assuming their high ticket prices are why the dogs sit, but to keep a dog in a tiny glass box with a hamster bottle as a water source for a medium sized dog is crazy work. His name is now Pablo, and Pablo will forever have grass to run around in and a family to love him.
