Tropical Hut has been a Portland institution since 1975, and while the name might suggest a tropical fish paradise, this family-run shop on the east side is first and foremost a reptile powerhouse — with a surprisingly robust freshwater fish and aquarium supply section that catches many first-time visitors off guard. The store's bread and butter is reptiles: ball pythons, corn snakes, king snakes, milk snakes, geckos, iguanas, and frogs fill rows of enclosures. They breed their own ball pythons on-site and produce frozen feeder mice and crickets in-house — a detail that snake owners across Portland swear by.
Their African banded crickets (reportedly less odorous than standard varieties) and high-quality frozen rats have built a loyal following among reptile keepers who refuse to buy feeders anywhere else. One customer's corn snake, purchased here for a daughter's 12th birthday, is still thriving 13 years later — a testament to healthy stock. But the aquarium side of Tropical Hut deserves attention too.
Multiple reviewers express genuine surprise at the depth of freshwater fish livestock and aquarium supplies packed into the store. Tanks dominate an entire section — the selection of front-opening enclosures and aquarium setups is reportedly so comprehensive that even the Oregon Zoo sources tanks here. Shelves are stocked with equipment, décor, and supplies for both aquatic and terrestrial setups.
The space itself is compact and crowded — tight aisles make wheelchair or walker access genuinely difficult — but that density reflects just how much inventory they've managed to fit under one roof. Staff members like Terri, who has nearly 40 years of experience, bring deep institutional knowledge that customers consistently praise. They've been known to troubleshoot issues over the phone and refer customers to reliable herp veterinarians.
Pricing runs competitive, particularly on feeders and tanks. For Portland reptile and freshwater fish enthusiasts, Tropical Hut remains a community anchor worth the visit.

Honestly the best pet store I've found in Portland for snake care. Mice are high quality, they have both frozen and live. Lots of cool things to add to a terrarium (although I still recommend a dollar tree run)

The BEST reptile shop in Portland. They freeze their own feeders for snakes, they have “African banded” crickets (way less stinky, and less gross) they have THE MOST reptiles & tarantulas available for purchase out of any shop in Portland. They also breed ball pythons!
