The Wet Spot Tropical Fish in Portland, Oregon is one of those stores that draws people from hours away — customers drive from Idaho and order from Eugene — and for good reason. With one of the largest freshwater fish selections in the Pacific Northwest, the store stocks everything from sparkling gourami and cardinal tetras to umbrella cichlids, African butterfly fish, ram cichlids, and an impressive range of plecos. If you're hunting for something uncommon, this is likely where you'll find it.
The sheer scale of the operation is immediately apparent. Rows upon rows of clean, well-maintained tanks house healthy fish that customers consistently praise for arriving in excellent condition, even after six-plus hour drives or shipped orders. One customer received an order of corydoras habrosus, clown killifish, amano shrimp, and more — every fish arrived unstressed and colored up within minutes.
The store also carries live plants, bonsai driftwood hardscape, aquarium equipment, and a solid betta selection that has reportedly been upgraded recently. The Wet Spot operates both as a retail shop and an online seller that ships fish, with staff like Kat keeping remote customers informed throughout the ordering process. In-store, the experience hinges on timing.
Sundays and busy periods mean putting your name on a waitlist, and waits of 30 minutes or more are common. Staff members like Mike (assistant manager), Georgie, and Elisa earn consistent praise for patience, fish sexing expertise, and willingness to check inventory for alternatives. Others, however, have found recommendations less reliable — one customer was steered toward odessa barbs as a cherry barb substitute with disappointing results.
Pricing is a recurring point of contention. Some customers find the cost justified by fish health and variety; others balk at goldfish prices that seem disconnected from size. The store doesn't offer loyalty programs or promotions, which frustrates long-time regulars.
For Portland-area aquarists seeking rare freshwater species, healthy livestock, and deep inventory, The Wet Spot remains the benchmark — just budget your time and your wallet accordingly.

I got a pretty decent sized order between a friend and me - 5 sparkling gourami, 1 honey gourami, 2 amano shrimp, a pair of umbrella cichlid, 6 cardinal tetra, 7 clown killi, 7 corydoras habrosus. I fully expected there to be at least a couple DOAs... or at least some stressed fish. Nope! They all were perfect. They came out acting very unstressed and they are still looking great. They colored back up within a few minutes are are absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the happy healthy fish! We are thrilled

I love coming here, it’s been 3 years and I spent hundreds of hundreds of dollars here including plants and fish. I wouldn’t give 5 stars because of customer service which sometimes really frustrated especially, but I can’t blame because they are busy. I love getting fish and plants here, I hope they have like but 5 get one free etc promotion for some type of schools fish would be nice. But recently the store stocked so much cool stuff like bonsai tree driftwood and upgrade their betta fish which I’m genuinely love. I just hope the customers service are a bit nicer and faster as well as promotion and membership stuff cuz I’ve been buying with them for years and never once getting reward comparing other places where they give points to use on raffle etc. it just showing you care about your customers and loyalty. Loyal customers are important than you think, they suggested the shop to other people etc.

It's a neat store with a really large collection of fish. But, I don't think the employees know their fish very well. I came in to buy some cherry barbs, but they had a low stock and only females were left. So, the employee assisting me said I should get odessa barbs instead. I was worried about their temperament, but, she reassured me they had the same behaviors as cherry barbs. I was feeling pressured into buying them, and ended up saying yes. I got them home and tried them for a month, but they were way, way more active than cherry barbs. They were not a good fit for my tank. I ended up donating them back to the store. No credit, or anything. But I just wanted to move on from my costly mistake. I wish the employee hadn't recommended the odessas and pressured me into buying them. Anywho, they're great for hardscape or if you know exactly what you want. But, be ready to stand your ground and don't trust the employee's opinions on fish behavior.

My son and I had a great experience at the store today. Mike helped us. He was awesome and so patient with our many questions! We will be back soon. Thanks Mike!

Update: tried to email to clarify wild pricing and received condescending response. Stay clear of here. Also, if I sound weird - please look at their own website. The 3” goldfish are a fraction of of the price on their own website. Clearly an error at the store but management is super stubborn and prefers to be condescending rather than admit a clear mistake. That is NOT the sale price for a small/medium (maybe 3”, probably less) orange fantail goldfish. The similar sized fancies on their own website are under $30. I’ve shopped st this specific store for years. Absolutely insane pricing. Waited forever yesterday to try to get a fantail goldfish. Maybe 3”??. Everything in the tank was tiny except for a medium-ish one with serious fin rot that wasn’t moving yesterday. I wanted a smaller fantail (nowhere near full size). I had to leave the waitlist from how insane the wait was because of my chronic pain. Took the trek today to get the fish. Was told it was the “XL fancy” and $75. I said that it is not a XL goldfish. They got a manager. Manager said it is XL in comparison to tiny ones but had nothing but baby comets to show for comparison. Said the slightly smaller (1.5-2”)??? would be $55 and they would reduce the $75 to $65 because it’s been there for a long time. Yeah. Who is going to pay that price? It’s ridiculous. That is why it has been sitting. That fish would be no more than $20 elsewhere. Combined nuts wait + pricing means I will not be back.

WOAH!!!! My daughter wrote up a whole "treatise" on why she is now responsible enough to care for a fish. SHE did her research and owned the entire process. At the age of 14, I was so impressed with her presenting a CASE to us as parents, how I could I not oblige.... However, SHE found this place and said, "Dad, can we go there, it's not your typical place and I think they'll do it right!" We signed the sheet, got our name called and then we met MIKE (Asst. Mgr). This place was packed, by the way on a Sunday! Even the customers got involved on our "journey".... The basics here, Mike and the entire team are impeccable! I can only say that this was a WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE!!!! WOW!!!! We will drive the 45 minutes and deal with PDX traffic just to come here. Nothing but AMAZING!!!

Fish are overpriced, service is absurdly slow and workers seem annoyed and like they don’t want to help. After putting my name down on the list for service it took over 30 minutes just to be seen. The whole time I knew exact What i wanted. Why spend 30 minutes with one person who does not know what they want, when you have a line of 5 plus people ready with what they need. The constant interruption from the cashier does not help either.

Wonderful shop, I've been coming here for a long time. The shop has a great selection, great looking tanks and healthy fish. Today was VERY busy but had a great experience with Georgie. She was very helpful, fast, helped me sex the fish and get the gender I was looking for and really super nice. Thanks for being awesome!
